I did a quick solo trip to the Frying Pan this weekend, and it was an awesome trip. (I don’t take many fish pics, these were taken for my family who don’t fish) The trout were hungry between 1-4 and 6-7:30 — early morning starts were for the scenery more than the fish. It’s the end of summer so I was tossing dries most of the time, best patterns were Green Drake size 10-12, Gray Drake extended body foam size 10-12, Massacre Midge size 18, Parachute Adams size 16-18 in gray. I also got a late day catch on a White Bu**er. A friend got me a mini recently and it’s my new favorite camping gadget. I cut up 2 pieces of firewood into ‘mini logs’, lasted me 2-hours until bedtime.

If this cicada pattern isn’t big and floaty enough for you, you may need to just start casting a tennis ball. Tying up some big boys for the brood hatch out on the east coast — from our favorite tiers at the Mega Moodah Poodah Cicada. I added some eyes and two-tone foam, other than that it’s tied to ‘s specs.

If you’ve fished in Colorado, you’re probably familiar with the RS2. The RS3, a variation on Rim’s original pattern I found on the youtube channel, is designed for larger Colorado rivers where mayflies are typically bigger than those in tailwaters. It’s tied on a heavy wire hook and has a nice flashy wingcase for off-color water.
