🧬 A teacher just traced his family tree back 9,000 years and 300 generations — to Britain’s oldest skeleton.

A British history teacher has discovered a remarkable personal connection to the distant past: his maternal lineage traces back 9,000 years to one of Britain’s earliest known inhabitants.

Adrian Targett, 42, from Somerset, shares direct maternal ancestry with “Cheddar Man,” the oldest complete skeleton ever unearthed in the UK. DNA testing on a tooth from Cheddar Man revealed mitochondrial DNA that matches Adrian’s—indicating an unbroken line of descent through the female line across 300 generations.

Cheddar Man lived around 7,150 BC as a Mesolithic hunter-gatherer, long before farming arrived in Britain. His remains were found in Gough’s Cave, not far from where Adrian lives today, making this genetic link all the more astonishing.

The discovery underscores how ancient bloodlines can endure through millennia, offering new perspectives on human migration, continuity, and identity. It also reminds us that history isn’t just something we study—it can live within us.
