Sixty miles east of San Diego, in a backcountry town of a few hundred people, somebody has been hand-dipping chocolate since 1921. 🍫

The Wisteria Candy Cottage sits on Old Highway 80 in Boulevard — not Alpine, though the two get swapped constantly, since both are strung along the same eastbound mountain climb. Boulevard is the far end of that climb, up near the Mexican border. The shop occupies a former one-room schoolhouse, and the name comes from Wisteria, an older name for the western end of the community.

The location only looks eccentric until you remember what Old 80 was. Before Interstate 8 was punched through the mountains, that two-lane road was the way across, and every traveller coming down out of the Lagunas or up from the desert passed the front door. A candy shop is only in the middle of nowhere after the highway moves.

The same family has run it for more than a century, which makes it one of the longest continuous single-family businesses anywhere in the county. Supplies still get driven in from town every couple of weeks.

A hand-dipped chocolate is a very small thing on which to build a hundred years.

This is a good weekend to satisfy your sweet tooth. We will be open for Memorial Day this Monday from 10-5. We hope you can swing by and see what we've made fresh. Our hours are Saturday-Monday 10-5.
