As you can see, I have tabs all over the place in this book. There are many instances of our world and our technology advancing on the broken backs of others. I think Appalachia knows this in the bones of its hills and the ghosts of its mountaintops. Cobalt mining is particularly cruel. Something Siddharth Kara wrote in the book sums up the feeling well: "...but hope in the Congo is like a hot coal--take hold, and it will scald you to the bone."
