POISON HEMLOCK | Likely found in northwest Ohio! Be Alert, Stay Away. This is considered North America’s most deadliest plant and in now found commonly in a 88 Ohio counties. Pictured here is a likely cluster of poison hemlock believed to be found in Wood county. Right now, mid June is peak for identifying this dangerous plant as the large white flowers distinct clusters make it highly visible. Make no mistake, it can be deadly to pets, children and adults.
Poison hemlock toxins must be ingested to induce poisoning or enter the body through other means such as through the eyes or nasal passages. These poisonous plants if confirmed are likely in the “bolt” stage of a biennial life cycle. The first year is spent in the “vegetative stage” as a low-growing basal rosette. Plants “bolt” during the second year to produce tall branched stems topped with umbrella-like flowers.
Proper management and removal of poison hemlock requires appropriate herbicides and PPE gear for those that may come in direct contact with this poisonous plant. Have you seen this highly toxic plant before? Please stay away.
