I've never seen a chainstitch print like the yoke on this 1950s Beau Brummel western shirt, and I like it!

And I tell ya, rayon gab wears and drapes so nicely, but when you steam it and put it in the truck, it just wrinkles right up. So sorry about that.

We're open 7 days a week, with a shop full of great vintage clothes. Come on over and see us on N 7th in Bozeman, MT some time!

Born in upstate New York in 1943, Francis “Cub” Schaefer started importing climbing and camping equipment in his teens. This first venture would go on to become Eastern Mountain Sports.
He moved to Colorado in 1961 to attend the University of Colorado Boulder. While there, he worked at a mountaineering store and as a climbing guide. Cub did his first design work in Boulder under George Lamb of Alp Sport.

Cub and his wife, Chris, moved to Jackson, WY in 1974, where they started Rocky Mountain Featherbed. Originally conceived to make down comforters, (hence the name) the brand quickly added down-filled ski vests with a distinctive leather yoke to their lineup, followed by similarly western infused ski jackets. The company thrived through the 1970s, coming to define the look of western mountain town fashion.
A snowless winter hit Jackson in 1980/81. Sales dried up while the company was in the midst of a major expansion. Problems with a Pittsburgh based business partner, who by that point was majority shareholder, exacerbated these problems. Overextended and with a warehouse filled with unsold product and material, Featherbed went bankrupt in early 1981.

Schaefer Outfitter is opening a new retail location here in Bozeman on August 29th inside Schnee’s on Main St.

The older examples of the brand hit at the intersection of my outdoor gear and western clothing obsessions, and I’ve been collecting vintage Schaefer pieces for years. For the next week, keep an eye out for a deep dive of the brand’s history! I’ll be sharing rare pieces from my collection and previewing ones we’ll be dropping in the shop on Saturday morning.

We just put out some interesting and rare Bozeman-made pieces from the early 1980s.
These were designed by Dana Gleason after selling his Kletterwerks backpack brand as part of his Mojo Systems / Quest Systems camera bag line. Gleason, of course, went on to found Dana Design in 1985 and Mystery Ranch in 2000.

We're open today and every day, 10am-6pm, come on over and say hey!
