Good things follow when the PMDs go 💥

The PMD hatch has earned its reputation because it simply delivers. While some hatches get bigger headlines, PMDs are the workhorses of the season, showing up consistently across a huge range of rivers and often sticking around for weeks or months. They bring trout to the surface in the middle of the day, create opportunities for everything from eager risers to maddeningly selective feeders, and force us to be more dynamic in our fly selection with boxes full of duns, cripples, emergers, and spinners. In the process, they make average anglers better and good anglers great. On a good PMD day, it can feel like every fish in the river is looking up.

Frankly, there aren’t many better ways to spend an afternoon.

Listen up!

Planning to fish in Montana this season? A quick heads up: Montana fishing licenses are now available online only, unless you visit an FWP office in person.

We have tablets available in the shop and are happy to help walk you through the process, but we cannot purchase a license on your behalf.

Getting your license is simple:
• Create an account or log in to your existing Montana FWP profile
• Purchase your Conservation License
• Add your AIS Prevention Pass (AISPP)
• Select your fishing license (Full Season, 5-Day, or 1-Day)
• Complete payment and save a digital copy to your phone or print a hard copy before heading to the river.

Don’t wait till you’re at the boat ramp to purchase as cell service can be unreliable — just the way we like it!

Catch a tagged trout this season? Don’t ignore it!

and are tagging fish across the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Ruby, and Madison to better understand trout movement, survival, and overall fish health.

If you land one, carefully snip the tag as close to the skin as possible, submit the info on the Montana FWP website, and you’ll contribute directly to the research effort. There’s also a little extra motivation involved—blue tags enter you into drawings for gear and fishing trips, while yellow tags are worth an automatic $100 reward.

All the more reason to get on the water!

A few late-summer fish on the Mo, happily moseying around a backeddy scum line, sipping Tricos upstream and down, and collectively giving you and your buddies the finger.

There are no simple solutions in this scenario — so how are you approaching these fish?

Treat your fly lines with love, and they will love you back!

We see a lot of dirty, cracked, kinked, nicked, or otherwise totally-beyond-salvaging fly lines taken out for routine fishing, but also for destination travel.

It is easily one of the most important elements of a successful and enjoyable fishing experience — so start fresh and give it the attention it deserves. Clean and treat regularly to the manufacturer’s specifications and be conscientious not strip it against the reel frame! You’ll double or triple the lifetime of a fly line with a little TLC.

PSA: If you aren’t taking advantage of these glorious spring conditions, it’s time to rearrange your priorities.

Water clarity is golden at the moment, and the streamer bite has improved along with it. We expect the caddis to turn back on as we enter May — be ready!
