Neihart got its name and post office in 1882. Founded by James LeRoy Neihart, John O’Brien, Richard Harley. By 1900, around 800 people lived here. 50-plus mines in these hills. Over $15 million in silver, lead, and zinc pulled out between 1881 and 1945. Neihart had a fire department, electric company, a school, two newspapers, three hotels and of course fourteen saloons on one side of the street, respectable stores on the other. Women didn’t cross over.

The Panic of 1893 killed most of the silver mines. Production limped along after that. Picked back up during WWII — Neihart became a major zinc source for the war effort.

Today, Neihart’s population is closer to 43 people, according to the last census.
