Our rent is now $1800 for 900 usable sq ft of space, and yet I’ve packed over 30k books (used & new) into there: I specialize in SF/F & children’s because I worked as an editor, copyeditor, proofreader, designer, typesetter for over 45 years in mainstream publishing. I’m an MA in Children’s Lit. I even edited the flavor text on cards for Wizards of the Coast. I was picked out of all the copyeditors working for the NY houses to copyedit Mickey Spillane’s *last book* — he asked his editor for “the best” because he was dying of cancer. I am still astounded. I KNOW the authors of almost all the SF/F in my store & can handsell. My bookstore is my last legacy, & I’ve kept it alive & vibrant, constantly changing to the economy, the times, the weather even (which meant I spent $10k of my savings to install a heat exchanger into my landlord’s building when he refused to help.) My store is my life, and I’m now 13 years on Main Street — the longest surviving retail store still owned by its original owner in Bradford, VT, a gorgeous little town that deserves so much more & so much more foot traffic. We have lost our Canadian weekenders and summer people due to Circumstances I won’t talk about. We’re so close to the border — it’s a huge loss I’m also adjusting the store to accommodate to handle. I’ve kept this store alive bc I KNOW a “hidden” bestseller by 45 yrs experience in the trade. $5,000 is honestly the only thing that will keep us here through the upcoming winter (almost no sales from after Christmas till end of April, when the summer people & tourists come again). We have emptied OUR OWN POCKETS for this store. Please help us stay in Bradford. The store is my Love.
