Every historic place deserves a guardian.

Ours just happens to be an Ent. ๐ŸŒณ

If you stroll past Broad Street Books and see someone standing quietly in front of a young treeโ€”admiring it, talking to it, even resting a hand on its trunkโ€”donโ€™t think twice.

Itโ€™s probably me.

When Ethan and I decided to plant a new tree in front of the bookstore, we werenโ€™t looking for landscaping. We were looking for something that would still be standing long after we are gone. Something that could quietly become part of Branchvilleโ€™s living story.

That search led us to Cerboโ€™s Hampton Nursery, where Tony Cerbo walked us through his familyโ€™s trees with the patience of someone who understands that choosing a tree is never just about choosing a tree.

We werenโ€™t selecting an ornament.

Then we met an

Strong. Resilient. Graceful.

A tree known for thriving in town settings, adapting to the seasons, and rewarding autumn with gold, orange, and crimson.

It felt right for a bookstore housed in Branchvilleโ€™s historic First National Bank buildingโ€”a place where old stories are preserved and new ones are discovered every day.

Its name came just as naturally:

๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฏ๐—ผ ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ผ

๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ, because every memorable tree deserves a proper name.

๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฏ๐—ผ, in honor of the family who nurtured it from its earliest days.

๐——๐—ถ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ผ, because Ethan and I now have the privilegeโ€”and the responsibilityโ€”of caring for it for generations of readers still to come.

Names tell stories.

Book lovers understand that better than most.

And because Ethan and I have been lifelong admirers of Tolkien, I couldnโ€™t resist imagining Maple as our own gentle Entโ€”a quiet guardian watching over the readers, conversations, friendships, and stories that pass through our doors.

So Maple has acquired a nickname:

๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐— ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜๐˜† ๐—˜๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ต๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ.

Of course, every guardian needs companions.

Greeting visitors at our entrance are ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—™๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ฒ, our concrete library lions. Their names honor the beloved lions of the New York Public Library, renamed by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia during the Great Depression to remind people of the qualities they would need to endure hard times.

Two virtues that have served readers well for generations.

Now they stand alongside their newest friend.

And, I hope, many more chapters ๐Ÿ“– still to be written.

Years from now, todayโ€™s new releases will become yesterdayโ€™s classics. Children who visit the bookstore today may one day return with children of their own. Seasons will turn. Books will be read, loved, donated, and discovered again.

Through it all, I hope Maple Cerbo DiStefanoโ€”the ๐— ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜๐˜† ๐—˜๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ต๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒโ€”continues to grow, offering shade to readers, beauty to our corner of Branchville, and a quiet reminder that the most meaningful things in life are rarely built overnight.

They are planted. ๐ŸŒฑ
They are cared for. ๐Ÿ’ฆ
They are shared. โœจ

Our heartfelt thanks to Tony Cerbo and his family, Frank Sutton, Mike Clune, the Branchville Road Crew, Mayor Frato, and our Borough Council.

Together, they didnโ€™t simply help plant a tree.

And know that, in one small corner of Branchville, three quiet guardians are keeping watch over a place where stories have always found a home.

Writing this down felt riskier than I expected.

It is one thing to plant a tree. It is another to put into words why it mattersโ€”to admit how much hope we are investing in something that will outlast us, and how much we want this little corner of Branchville to keep growing stories long after we are gone.

Vulnerability on the page is still bravery, even when the stakes feel small.

If you have a story about this town, a tree, a place that held you, or a moment that rooted you hereโ€”consider writing it down.

You donโ€™t have to be perfect.

You only have to be willing.

๐Ÿ† Honored. Humbled. Grateful.

I woke up this morning to congratulatory texts from two of my fellow Branchville small business ownersโ€”friends who took a moment out of their day to celebrate with us. Before I even saw the announcement myself, they had already reached out.

That simple gesture reminded me why I love being part of this community.

Ethan and I are incredibly honored to be named 2026 Best Specialty Shop in Sussex County in the New Jersey Heraldโ€™s Community Choice Awards.

To everyone who voted, visited our bookstore, shared a post, recommended us to a friend, or simply walked through our doors over the past 23 yearsโ€ฆ thank you. Your support has made this journey possible, and we never take it for granted.

Congratulations to every nominee and every winner across every category. Being recognized by the community is something to celebrate, and every business represented helps make Sussex County the special place it is.

This morningโ€™s texts were also a reminder that success isnโ€™t diminished when someone else succeeds. Itโ€™s multiplied when we celebrate one another.

Iโ€™ve always believed that when we collaborate, encourage, and elevate each other, everyone wins. Thatโ€™s the spirit that makes Sussex Countyโ€”and Branchvilleโ€”feel like home.

Cheers to our fellow business owners, our loyal customers, New Jersey Herald for highlighting businesses and a community that continues to show up for one another.

Congratulations to all! ๐ŸŽ‰
