Day 3 of our Texas Garden Center Tour started bright and early at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, where we spent several hours exploring the incredible gardens and gathering inspiration. 🌿🌸 If you’re ever in the Dallas area and love plants, this is a destination we highly recommend!

Before making the long drive back to Mississippi, we squeezed in one final stop at another beautiful garden center to wrap up the trip.

Over the past three days, we visited more than 11 nurseries and garden centers, filled our cameras with inspiration, and came home with countless ideas to help make Rivers Greenhouse & Garden even better. Thank you for following along on our journey. 💚🪴🌺🌻🌸

Day 2 of our Texas Garden Center Tour is complete!

Today we visited some incredible garden centers all around the Wichita Falls / Dallas area, gathering inspiration, checking out unique displays, and picking up fresh ideas that we can’t wait to bring back to Rivers Greenhouse & Garden.

Happy Father’s Day to the father of the beautiful bougainvillea trees you all love and admire every year at Rivers.
He is also the one who started Rivers when he moved with his 4 children and wife to Mississippi in 1979.
He is our rock! Super blessed to call him dad!!!!

HIBISCUS SAW FLIES

Something’s eating the leaves on my hibiscus! Hibiscus sawfly (Atomacera decepta) is a small caterpillar-like insect that often causes severe defoliation of certain types of hibiscus (typically the deciduous hardy hibiscus), reducing the leaves to only the lacy veins. Actually this insect is not a caterpillar, but the larva of a sawfly, a group of insects related to bees and wasp.

Because the spiny green larvae are less than 3/8 of an inch long when fully mature, they are easy to overlook. However, they are not too difficult to spot if one carefully examines the undersides of leaves that are being damaged. The wasp-like adults are less than ¼ inches long, and are mostly black with a distinct orange thorax. Because of their striking coloration, they are relatively easy to spot, despite their size. Seeing the adults congregating on the leaves of a hibiscus plant is a sure sign that that plant will soon be under attack. Eggs are inserted into the leaves, usually near the tip end of the leaf.

Hibiscus is by far the most common host for this insect, especially the large-flowered ‘dinner-plate’ types, (H. mosheutos).

Control, if desired, with spinosad, sevin, eight, acephate, horticulture oil (make good contact), etc.
