September Waller of the Month: Patrick Sephton

Patrick Sephton (Massachusetts) – Based in Hadley, Massachusetts, Patrick has been self-employed in the trade for nine years, specializing in dry stone walling and traditional masonry. He was introduced to the craft during a study abroad trip to Croatia, working with Dragodid, an organization dedicated to preserving the region’s historic stonework techniques.

Second image: Built entirely from schist, this wall, patio, fire pit, were built on a site with difficult access. The wall includes built-in benches and a cubby for firewood.

A Cooperative August Workshop in New Hampshire

Words from instructor and site champion, Pete Ryder:

We hosted a phenomenal 2-Day Intro workshop at The Stone Trust NH in the middle of August. The weather was ideal, the students were enthusiastic, and the stones were cooperative!

The first day is when concepts and reality collide. Simple ideas like “long way in” and “cross the joints” meet the reality of oddly shaped stone. Each student deals with this differently, falling on a spectrum between ‘good enough/move on’ and the endless pursuit of perfection. As we work through this, all come to realize that no stone wall is perfect and that some decisions are better than others!

Kraft Bricklayer's Hammer Back in Stock!

We now have Kraft supplies back in stock! The bricklayer's hammer is the first tool available. This tool is ideal for trimming and splitting thinner or softer stones. If you’re working with Goshen stone or other stone that averages less than 3” thick, this hammer is amazingly versatile. It also makes a great digging tool for setting foundation stones.
