Great and Unfortunate Things by Jason Arday is now in stock! Diagnosed with non-verbal autism and developmental delays at the age of three, with the presumption of life-long institutionalization, Arday is now the youngest black professor at Cambridge University.

As the parent of a late talker, I related to Arday's mother after his very harsh diagnosis*. What I found fascinating in Arday's description of what it's like to be autistic, as well as the (autistic) things he continues to do to this day that are enjoyable. And then there's his mother, who may not be an educated woman, but was certainly the authority on her eldest child.

Great and Unfortunate Things is a compact, fast, and well written memoir that gives great insight not only into what autism can be like, but into what parenting an autistic child can be like. And it's funny, without being self-deprecating!

"Jason Arday grew up in a lively corner of South London as the second youngest of three boys. He was diagnosed with autism and developmental delays at age three, and experts told his parents he would never speak, write, or live independently—and should be institutionalized.

His parents refused. Instead, his extraordinary mother, Giff, drawing on her faith and thinking outside the box, embraced his neurodivergence and devoted herself to helping him realize a potential few others believed possible—using everything from the proverbs of her West African culture to music, sports, and film to help him make sense of the world.

In Great and Unfortunate Things, we see how Arday went from being nonverbal as a child and illiterate until he was eighteen to scaling unimaginable heights as an adult. Without romanticizing the struggle, this is a story of determination against seemingly insurmountable odds—and of a family and a small group of believers whose compassion helped him see what is possible.

A powerful story for our moment, Arday’s journey is a testament to resilience, dignity, and the life-changing force of community in action."

*Times have changed, and of course this takes place in England, where a doctor's bedside manner can be about as pleasant as a brick in the face

The Dark and Other Scary Stories by Max Brallier (The Last Kids on Earth), illustrated by Letizia Rubegni is now in stock! This volume contains 9 stories from the Mister Shivers (Acorn) series, plus a brand new story exclusive to this collection.

Honestly I, an adult* was also pretty creeped out by these stories! 😆Brought me right back to being a young kid with (perfectly reasonable) fears of the world.

"THE book to share at sleepovers or around a campfire! If you love sleepless nights and monsters that lurk in the dark, then this spine-chilling book is for you!"

*or so I say...😏

For the foreseeable future we will be donating the proceeds from these books to the GoFundMe of Scott Garvey’s family, which can also be found linked below. Please go and read what his family has written about him and what they have been left with, even if you do not donate.

A year ago this week a Vermont State Trooper killed Scott Garvey as he was experiencing a mental health crisis, alone and unarmed in his home in Putney. Last week the State of Vermont ruled the shooting as justified. While not a surprise (as that has been the outcome of every investigation into a Vermont State Trooper who has killed someone), it is a devastating outcome for his family and for our community. There will be a vigil at Pliny Park in Brattleboro on July 7th at 5:30 to commemorate a year since his killing and we hope to see you there.

The Wise Pickle, written by Sarah Howden and illustrated by Sabina Howe is absolutely delightful!

Never losing its zen weirdity, it gets increasingly funny and has a killer last line. The artwork is absolutely fantastic.

"A pickle arrives out of nowhere.

“I have lived a lot of life,” it says.

As the pickle slowly withers in the hot sun, the local animals ask it questions. Questions like “Do you ever get bored?” and “Are you hungry?” and “Why are we here?”

The pickle has all the answers.

Except one: what happens next?"

Bromantasy by Marie Roche is here!

Two Heroes. One brain cell.

Fellas, is it gay to kiss your bff while on a quest through the forest you’re unqualified for?

Juniper O’Reilly is good at only two things: demolishing a pint of mead and finding the perfect skincare routine. Everything else—taking care of the farm, bartering for goods, any sort of manual labor—falls to Juniper’s best friend, the absurdly capable, endlessly patient Mo Elmthorn.

But when Juniper accidentally volunteers them both for a quest to kill a fearsome monster, he knows he’s finally gotten in over his head. Juniper hates camping, he hates the dark, and there’s no way all these foraged mushrooms are going to sit well in his stomach. One thing he doesn’t hate? How good Mo’s thighs look in his questing pants—he doesn’t have time to think about that, though, with a monster to hunt and their futures on the line.

But monsters come in all shapes and sizes. When Juniper and Mo realize that the terrifying beast they’ve sworn to kill is just a scared little girl torn from her family, they’re off to find not only the true villain of the story, but maybe even a happy ending.
