For the second consecutive year in a row, Texas has broken the state-wide annual Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle nesting record with still over a month left in nesting season!
These numbers continuing to increase for this most critically endangered species of sea turtle reminds us why the work we do is so important! There is visible evidence that the hard work of many entities have lead to this increase in numbers and we need to continue to protect this species! Natural events like high tides can wash out turtle nests on the lower beach and there are many other threats such as predators, beach driving, etc.
It's thrilling to see that the Texas nesting program, under the leadership of Dr Donna Shaver, has effectively created practices that allow visible recovery of the species!
