EAST WALKER RIVER
9/7/24: Despite the recent fish kill, the river continues to fish very well as long as you concentrate your efforts on the river two+ miles below the reservoir. With the lack of fishing pressure it's almost like opening day without the crowds. We continue to see good hatches of midges, Tricos, BWO's and caddis every day. The water is still a little warm so look for that riffle and pocket water where the river has good oxygen levels and you will find willing and happy trout. All of your favorite techniques will work but with the latest drop in the river flow it's hard to beat a good old dry/dropper rig. Don't forget, we have 30 miles of amazing trout water below Bridgeport Reservoir!

Don't think all the fish on the East Walker died! This bad boy came up for a well presented dry fly on the Sceirine Ranch today. Remember, the fish kill only impacted the upper two miles of river. That leaves 30 plus miles of river that is healthy and full of trout.

This is a good time to start thinking about your favorite local lakes.

EAST WALKER:
The river is currently running just under 1200 cfs which is simply to high for good fishing. Keep an eye on our flows page and be ready for some excellent fishing when it drops. https://www.walkerriveroutfitters.com/

HOT CREEK:
The runoff has finally begun in earnest and the creek is running high and dirty. It will probably be a while before it drops into fishable shape.

UPPER OWENS:
The river is up and dirty due to runoff.

LOWER OWENS:
The DWP site is showing around 750 cfs. It looks like it will be a while before the river drops. Probably not until fall.

LOWER OWENS
Pleasant Valley Dam Road is now open to the top end of the campground. Chalk Bluff Road remains closed. It doesn't really matter what roads are open because the river is running around 630 cfs below PVR and the fishing opportunities are pretty limited to the soft edges and eddies. Look for this stretch of river to fish great in the fall. The Gorge Road to upper and middle gorge access roads is now open and the fishing is decent once you find the few pools that are holding most of the fish. There is a waterfall in the upper gorge that's dumping some dirty water into the river so water clarity isn't what it usually is but it's still fishable. Be prepared with plenty of water if you decide to drop in.

RECOMMENDED FLIES: GTI Caddis 12-14, Blowtorch 14-16, Tasmanian Devil 12-18, Sexy Walt 12-16, Perdigon 14-18, Rainbow Warrior 16-20, W.D's 18-22, Zebra Midge 18-22, Top Secret Midge 18-20, RS2 16-18, BTS 16-18, Darth Baetis 16-18, Micro Mayfly 16-18, Mercer's Poxyback Baetis 16-18, Juju Baetis 16-18, Graphic Caddis 14-18, Fox's Poopah 14-18, Sprout Midge 18-22, Griffith's Gnat 16-20, Sprout BWO 16-18, BWO Sparkle Dun 16-18, Lawson's BWO Thorax Dun 16-18, Para Adams 16-18, E/C Caddis 16-18, Missing Link 16-18, X Caddis 16-18

UPPER OWENS
Benton Crossing Road is now open to Browns campground. We're not sure if it's quite worth the effort to fish at the moment. There is still plenty of snow on the ground and obviously, access is still an issue. We expect the water clarity to begin to deteriorate once Deadman and Glass creeks start to get into runoff.

RECOMMENDED FLIES: San Juan Worm 10-12, Squirmy Wormy 10-12, Glo Bug 14-16, Beads 4-8 mm, Deep Blue Poison Tung 18-20, Zebra Midge 18-20, Brassie 18-20, Disco Midge 18-20, Juju Midge 18-22, Micro Mayfly 18-20, Copper John 18-20, Griffith's Gnat 18-22, Sprout Midge 18-22, Matuka 8-10, Home Invader 6-8

EAST WALKER RIVER
The good news is highway 395 is finally open north of Lee Vining. Unfortunately, CA 182/NV 338 out of Bridgeport remains closed at the border due to flooding so we still can't get to the open side of the river in Nevada. We will keep you posted as we get more information about road conditions and openings. Flows on the river are hovering around 1100 cfs and needless to say, that's too much water for good fishing. We're hoping to see the river drop into fishable shape sometime in July, but who knows, it could be sooner!

RECOMMENDED FLIES: Sexy Walt 12-16, GTI Caddis 12-16, Blowtorch 14-16, Tasmanian Devil 14-16, Frenchie 12-16, Perdigon 16-20, Duracell 12-18, Rubberlegs 8-12, 20 Incher 10-12, Poxyback Stone 10-12, Rainbow Warrior 16-20, WD's 18-22, Zebra Midge 18-22, top Secret Midge 18-22, Disco Midge 20-22, Juju Baetis 16-20, Micro Mayfly 16-20, Barr's BWO Emerger 16-20, Gallup's BWO Nymph 16-20, Darth Baetis 16-20, Chubby Chernobyl 10-12, Designated Hitter 10-12, Stimulator 10-12, Griffith's Gnat 16-20, Sprout Midge 18-22, Parachute Adams 16-18, Sparkle Dun 16-18, Thorax Dun 16-18, Brook's CDC Dun 16-18, MOAL 8-10, Sculpzilla 6-8, Baby Gonga 6

HOT CREEK
We are finally seeing a long break in the seemingly never ending series of storms. The road out to the canyon is under 2-3 feet of snow so don't expect to be able to drive out there for the opener. If you are willing to hike, ski, snowshoe or sled to the creek the fishing has been okay but not great. There is no need to get out early as the best fishing is late morning through the afternoon when the BWO's get active. If you decide to make the trip to the creek you will find fish eating midges, BWO's, eggs, worms and scuds. Fish numbers seem to be much lower than normal and several of the trout have scars from Osprey attacks. As a result, the fish are looking for protection in either deep or riffled water. Parking is limited so think about your fellow anglers and visitors and please don't block access.

RECOMMENDED FLIES: Zebra Midge 18-22, WD's 20-22, Brassie 18-22, Juju Midge 20-22, Slim Shady 18-20, Micro Mayfly 18-20, JuJu Baetis 18-20, Galloup's BWO 16-18, Barr's BWO Emerger 16-18, Slush Egg 14-16, Glo Bug 14-16, Olive Scud 12-16, Epoxy Scud 14-18, Griffith's Gnat 16-22, Sprout Midge 18-22, BWO Thorax Dun 16-18, BWO Sparkle Dun 16-18, Parachute Adams 16-18, Lawson's BWO Thorax Dun 16-18.
