Colorado’s SB25-003 is now in effect. Here’s what you need to know.
We’ve been receiving a lot of questions about Colorado’s new fi***rm law, Senate Bill 25-003, so we wanted to clear up a few common misconceptions.
✅ The law does NOT apply to every fi***rm. It only affects the future purchase or transfer of certain Specified Semiautomatic Fi****ms (SSFs) as defined by Colorado law. Many commonly purchased handguns are not covered by this law. (Colorado General Assembly)
If you’re planning to purchase a fi***rm that falls under SB25-003, the general process includes:
• Apply through the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Fi****ms Safety System (FSS).
• Complete your county sheriff’s eligibility process.
• Attend the required in-person fi****ms safety course with a verified instructor.
• Successfully complete the written and practical exam.
• Your dealer verifies your eligibility before completing the transfer. (Colorado Parks and Wildlife)
For many applicants:
🎯 If you already have qualifying hunter education, you may qualify for the shorter basic course. Others will complete the extended course, depending on eligibility. (Colorado Parks and Wildlife)
