This one has been hanging in our house for a bit, which usually tells us something.

We bought it for the scale, but it’s really the surface that keeps pulling us back — all that impasto, layered paint, drips, and those muddy blues, ochres, pinks, and creams working against each other. It feels different depending on where you’re standing.

A mid-century oil on canvas in an artist-made frame with the kind of color and movement that made us bring it home in the first place. We’ve been blessed to get a few works by James Gilliland (1920-1990) lately, and this is another good one.

Be aware the frame shows its age, which feels right for a piece that came out of an upstate NY barn.

Wash paintings are all about knowing when to stop.

These two are a good example of that — vague figures, just enough definition, and a lot of control in how little is actually needed to make them work. The matching lemon gold gilt frames are a great finish and make the pair feel especially cohesive.

Two landscapes, two very different approaches.

The larger piece is a heavily textured landscape with a loose, modernist feel, finished in a simple lath frame.

The smaller landscape on the table is presented in a rare Kulicke frame — one of those frames that is almost as interesting as the painting itself.

Sorry for the radio silence.

We’re really happy to have picked up a few works by celebrated American modernist James V. Gilliland.

Gilliland was a longtime member of the Albany Artists Group, served as its president in the 1950s, and in 1956 helped co-found the Oakroom Artists in Schenectady. His work is associated with modernism and abstract figurative painting, and his paintings have become increasingly collected in recent years.

This one, titled Mardi-Gras, is particularly compelling — dense, layered brushwork with flashes of red, ochre, olive, charcoal, and cream. Signed and dated 1960, and finished in an artist-lathed frame.
