Lodin’s Thanks Everyone for participating in our Guess the “Mystery Mineral” contest! What a Great Response !!! This is Libyan Desert Glass, a rare, naturally occurring impactite (a type of tektite) composed of nearly 98% pure silica. It formed about 29 million years ago when a meteorite impact or massive airburst superheated the sand of the eastern Sahara (spanning the border of modern-day Libya and Egypt) to over 2,900°F. Only one guess was allowed for the contest. If you entered more then one, you were disqualified.
