In this hobby, you meet and make friends with fellow enthusiasts from all over the country. As is the case with my good radio buddy Jeremy Stone of J & J Vintage Radio Restoration, Repair & Sales, who drove in from Delaware. Jeremy was visiting family in Northern Illinois, and decided to take a few hours out of his day to drive up to my place in Wisconsin. We hung out at my workbench & radio room, talked shop, and of course did some trading of radios.
With each of us running a small hobby entrepreneurship, we support each other by promoting each others business, and Jeremy keeps me busy, as he continues to buy my Auxiliary inputs for vintage radios, that he uses on his customers restorations.
I then took Jeremy to lunch for one of the best smash burger places in Wisconsin, showed him one of Al Capone's safe houses here in Brookfield and then for some authentic Wisconsin frozen custard. Thanks for the visit Jeremy, I will make it out to the East coast one of these years to visit your workshop!

Double vision with these twin Aqua colored Crosley "Coloradios". I had one in my collection for quite some time, and recently acquired a second. They are model 10-139 manufactured in 1950. My local radio buddy Dave Salkin wanted one, so before he gets it, I replaced all the original paper/wax capacitors and replaced any weak tubes. I also gave it a fresh new set of rubber feet, since the originals were all dried out and flattened, looking like smushed Junior Mints, or a turtle shell. I still wasn't getting good reception at all, and found that the loop antenna on the cardboard backer was compromised in several places. I then used the backer with loop antenna off of the one I am keeping, since that one isn't restored yet. I will need to eventually find a parts radio for this backer board for mine now. It has 3 leads for the antenna, and 2 leads for the auxiliary phono pick up jack.
These Crosley "Coloradios" came in 6 different colors:
Model 10-135 White
Model 10-136 Black
Model 10-137 Chartreuse
Model 10-138 Maroon
Model 10-139 Aqua
Model 10-140 Metallic Lt Green

From my collection, is this pair of Truetone radios from 1951/1952. With an appealing design, they are molded in striking color combinations (not painted). Model D2108 has an off white cabinet, with a vivid red grill. Model D2109 has a classy Plum colored cabinet with an Ivory grill. Being a 4 tube set, they aren't the best performers, but a must have nonetheless!

I recently picked up this Mint Green Westinghouse clock radio to make another series trio. These are from 1955 and sport some very nice color combos. They have such a cool design layout, with the large Telechron clock, and the discrete slide rule tuning dial along the bottom edge. The fourth color it was offered in was Ivory (model H548-T5), which I currently do not have in my collection. This model has the typical AA5 tube Chassis layout.

The latest project off my bench is this 1959 Truetone model DC2036A in an eye appealing Turquoise. I have three of this same model in this same color, and all three were severely sun faded, more than the norm for other MCM plastic radios molded in color. Not sure if it had something to do with the formula of the plastic used in this particular model or not. Being 67 years old, decades of sun exposure has turned this once vivid Turquoise radio to a Brownish-Aqua color. I wet sanded the cabinet, starting with a 600 grit, working my way all the way up to 5000 grit, and then hand polished with Meguiars polishing compound for a shiny mirror finish. This time consuming task removed 90%+ of the sun fading, bringing it closely back to its original color.
I then replaced all the paper & wax capacitors, replaced the bad & weak tubes, fixed a broken solder joint on the printed circuit board and added an external antenna lead for better reception. This thing now plays great, and it looks even better.

I picked up this six tube Sylvania radio last week. It's a 1954 Model 614 in Mars Red, with a neat industrial looking expanded steel mesh grill. What I think is the coolest feature on this radio is the pilot light behind the translucent tuning knob...very clever!

This English made radio I've had in my collection for some time now. It's a 1960 Regentone model DP-3 in a Regal Red with Gold trim. It has some very nice lines indicative of Mid-century styling.
It is a 220 Volt AC set with this 4 tube lineup (Valves as the Brits call themđŸ˜‰) :
*UBF80-IF/RF (amplifier & det.)
*UCH81-(triode oscillator and heptode mixer)
*UCL83-(AF amplifier triode and an output pentode)
*UY85-(Half Wave rectifier)
This will be making its way to it's new home in South Carolina, to live with my good Radio buddy Jacob Weinstein

About 2 weeks ago, I lost out on this same model in Yellow that was up for auction. I mentioned this to my good radio buddy Jeremy Stone who said he had one in Turquoise that he'd be willing to part with. We then worked out a trade and this cool Packard-Bell model 5R5 now sits proudly in my collection. This 5 tube set is a west coast radio manufactured in Los Angeles in 1959. I particularly love the atomic emblem on the tuning indicating pointer.

I took it on the road this weekend and set up at the Cincinnati Antique Radio Society's annual "Radiorama" on Saturday June 20th. The show/swap was well attended and there was near perfect weather. Was able to visit with old radio friends, met some new ones, and sold, traded & bought several vintage radios. Thanks to all the local club members for their welcoming hospitality!
After the show, my radio buddy Steve Fleury took me to the newly renovated American Sign Museum in Cincinnati....I was in vintage heaven with neon sign overload....I'd highly recommend this as a stop if you are in the area.
