Von Huene Workshop and the Early Music Shop of New England

09/30/2026

I've been trying to get as many consignments as possible checked in and listed on the web site before I leave for England tonight. There are a couple of interesting double reed instruments that we rarely have for resale.

We have two beautiful Eichentopf oboes from Sand Dalton, both in stained boxwood with brass keywork, just re-reamed by Sand with new reeds. The oboe in c' is $2200 including a large assortment of reed-making tools. There is also an oboe d'amore in a priced at $2100. Both instruments come in soft Cavallaro cases.

At the earlier end of the spectrum is a pair of shawms from Robert Cronin, a soprano in d' (with a small chip on the bell) and an alto in g with key and fontanelle. Both are made of maple and include pirouetted and working reeds, currently housed together in a lightweight hard shell case. The soprano is $600, the alto $1100, or $1500 for the pair.

The last two times I tried to feature Sarah Jeffereys's new *My Favorite Melodies for ALTO*, it ended up being back ordered. This time, I HAVE IT IN HAND, so if you placed an order for it previously, please place a new one and it will be filled immediately.

UPDATE ON THE SIGO BASSES AND ALTOS

I FINALLY got a response from Kunath. Although I ordered these as soon as they were announced, apparently I should have placed a much larger order. They've filled direct orders first, then big orders from several other retailers, and we've been pushed back multiple times. Kunath writes, 'unfortunately it will take a few more weeks to deliver the basses because we currently have problems with the printers. We ordered some more printers but...we still need more time. We (now) think that delivery will be at the end of October' (the previous estimate was August).

AND the SIGO alto has been redesigned, so before any were shipped, they've shredded the stock and are starting over, so we won't see any of these before the end of the year.

We apologise for the delay.

I'd like to have the time and resources to post instruments on our FB page more regularly, but I couldn't resist showing off this one. This is von Huene alto #14, made in 1959, kingwood (I think) without the ivory socket rings ubiquitous on later recorders (in 1959. Friedrich purchase two enormous African elephant tusks which is another interesting story). This was one of the recorders that caught the attention of Frans Brüggen, Hans Martin Linde, and European players: 'Have you heard about this young American maker?'
This instrument is for sale, $1400 plus shipping.

If you recently sent us a package via FedEx and are wondering why it hasn't been marked as 'delivered', instead of delivering a package to 65 Boylston Street yesterday, a FedEx driver left a call tag on the door of 59 Boylston (it must have been a new driver, as we get FedEx packages nearly every day).

The only way to make arrangements for delivery is to use FedEx.com, where the call tag number is 'not recognised; it may not be in our system yet'. Of course there is no phone number to call...

The von Huene Workshop is pleased to announce the return of the F.G.A. Kirst traverso to our models in stock! This traverso was one of Friedrich's flagship designs, and this latest run is in our opinion exceptional. The Kirst is a later 18th century traverso that would have been well known in the court of Frederick the Great, and it excels in music with a higher tessitura than earlier baroque flute music, though the low register of this model is also very well balanced. These Kirsts are made from exquisite, well-aged Grenadilla and an imitation ivory with an exceptionally beautiful grain as can be seen on the endcap. The key follows the original pattern, but instead of using sterling silver we now make it out of white bronze, a harder metal with better tarnish resistance. The springs are made from tempered stainless steel, which we have redesigned for a slightly lighter action than Friedrich's original springs. This model has a corps de rechange for A=440 & 415, of which both work nicely, with an optional *A=430* center available upon request.

Please inquire for availability by calling us at 617-277-8690, or emailing [email protected]. You can also find the listing for this model on our website. We do not have many of these!

It is with great sadness that we announce that Nik von Huene passed unexpectedly of natural causes on August 21, 2026. Nik lived a life full of laughter, connections and deep love for the people around him. It is such a stunning loss to his family, all of his friends, colleagues, and the workshop. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 26, at 10 a.m., at All Saints Parish, 1773 Beacon Street, Brookline, Massachusetts. Public transportation is strongly encouraged due to parking restrictions.

Well the Moeck shipment returned to Germany after an annoying customs snafu will soon be on its way back to us. By the time they reach us it will have three months since the order and cost us arount $1000 in shipping and fees. We will be lucky to break even.

After returning from two workshops in different locations, the retail shop is filled with boxes of music and instruments which I've barely begun to put away as I repack for Pinewoods Early Music Week. It's a bit overwhelming.
