I was doing laundry yesterday 🫧 and saw this Whole Foods bag with a graphic on it that said, “shop local.” 🏠 While a Whole Foods is definitely close to here, the phrase Shop Local is meant to promote buying goods and services from independent, privately owned businesses in your immediate community 💗 rather than from national chains or giant online retailers.

Shopping Local means shopping small, with all the wonderful, quirky, high-touch experiences that go along with it. So sure, shop at Whole Foods - but shop at your truly local stores, too. ♥️

🏠 We’re coming up on 4 years at our 8th Ave location, and reflecting on what makes this storefront unique. 🌷 When I built it, I wanted it to feel like shopping in someone’s home - so the cozy vibes were key but more importantly we wanted to highlight some of the space’s unique and historic features. 💫

What are some of your favorite details about our store on 8th Ave? (And yes, we’re gonna throw a birthday party!)

As a small business owner, I find constant inspiration in other entrepreneurs. In today’s love letter - our first episode of Small Business Shoutouts - I want to highlight the work of Brooklyn Blooms and its founder, LaParis Phillips. 💌

I’ve been ordering arrangements from Brooklyn Blooms for about eight years, and not only is their work incredibly creative and impeccably executed, LaParis is also an inspiring business owner. I’ve been thrilled to follow her journey. ✨

LaParis, you don’t know me, but you truly inspire me. You are the one who deserves all the flowers. 🌹

This weekend, we took the shop on the road and joined Brooklyn Pop Up in Red Hook. We don’t do markets very often, and it felt good to branch out into new territory, meet folks in a new setting and get real time feedback from customers new and old. Lots of people came by the table and said, “Oh, my gosh - I love your store!” And plenty said, “I’ve never heard of you.”

My pitch was the same: “I own a gift shop with two storefronts in Park Slope. Today I’m featuring some of my favorite Brooklyn makers and a few other best sellers.” In a lot of ways it felt full circle, just me and a table of beautiful things introducing myself to new people in the hopes they’d find a gift that they love. But you know what felt best? Saying, “I own a gift shop” over and over again. Hell yeah, I do. I did that. We are doing that. Onward. One surprise ball at a time!

PS: Shoutouts to my lovely neighbors Alicia Degener and DesertWestStore for making my sore feet worth the while. Thank you to Brooklyn Pop-Up for having me!
