In 1988, Issey Miyake introduced pleats to his designs. While the pleating method has been around forever, Miyake used new techniques to add dimension to the pieces, looking and feeling differently according to how you move around within day to day life. He used 2 to 3 times as much fabric as needed and constructed an oversized garment. After the garment was made he folded, sewed, and ironed to get it pleated. This gave him more control over details, size, and direction of each fold.

In 1994 Issey Miyake launched Pleats Please, shifting his focus to ready to wear, focusing on pieces meant to be reworn countless times, that could be washed without becoming wrinkled. Pieces that could be worn while running errands, out to a party, or worn down the runway!
