I decided to make a 20 year dream a reality, and built up this 2002 Cannondale R700 to celebrate our country turning 250 this 4th of July. The story behind the frame was the primary motivation, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. This bike will be on display in our storefront for the month of July, so stop on by!

On November 11, 2001, a group of New York City firefighters embarked on a cross-country cycling tour to thank the nation for its overwhelming support during the 9/11 attacks. They rode from New York to Pasadena, CA in 35 days. To support this ride, Cannondale designed a special edition of its R700 road bike, adorned with patriotic Stars and Stripes graphics. A limited number were sold through Cannondale dealers. $50 from each bike sale was donated to the Police and Fire Widows and Children’s Fun, $43,000 was eventually raised for the cause. The tour itself raised over $100,000 for charity.

I wanted to give back to a nation that had given so much to the police and fire departments,” Dan Rowan said. “So many people had given both emotional support and money. One homeless guy gave me $1.22 — it was all the money he had. Little kids gave me their lemonade money — they really moved me. The people who came to our funerals from all across the country — they made it great for us. We touched them and they touched us. I just wanted to give something back.”

The return airfares of the firefighters and the Cannondale bicycles they used were donated, but otherwise the men paid their own expenses and used their own vacation time to make the trip.Rowan believes that the trip has helped in his own recovery process. He was off-duty on September 11th and arrived at Ground Zero shortly after both towers had fallen. At that point, his ten colleagues were already lost. “Every time we hit a roadblock in our cycle, I thought of them. I carried pictures of them in my mind. It helps to feel we were doing something to honor them.”

This bar tape is old enough to legally drink and smoke in NY state, and we’ve finally got the perfect project to wrap it on! I picked up this Cinelli flag tape over ten years ago at the jumble knowing it was both the first and the final piece of a long term puzzle, been hiding it in a cool dry place ever since. Thanks Excel Sports and NY Bike Jumble for supplying the icing on the cake! 🎇🎂🇺🇸🚲
