So you have starting a fire covered. How about drinkable water? There are multiple things you can do, like collecting water on a tarp from rain, or getting water from a stream, or even digging a 3 foot wide hole to put plastic over, with a cup in the center of the hole and a small sone in the center of the plastic suspended over the cup/bowl to form a "solar still". There are dozens of ways to gather water, even from ocean water, but how to make sure it is pure?

Building a filter is possible, but depends upon the availability of bottles or tubing, or buckets, but it is great for longer term if you have a base camp built and can scavenge materials to contain the sand, gravel, and charcoal for the filter media. this will remove most contaminants, but you will likely still need to boil your water to make sure things like protozoa and bacteria are killed off. If you have a large clear container like a 5 gallon water jug or even 2 liter bottles that you can put the purified water into, you can cap them and leave them in the sunlight for a day or so, the strong UV rays from the sun can do the trick.

If you need it immediately though, boiling, chlorine (purification tablets or even a couple drops of bleach in an emergency per 2 liter) or iodine based purification can be a life saver. Other products exist of course, such as gravity or pump style filtration that is portable, or the new P&G emergency water purification powder, that can make even the nastiest looking swamp water drinkable in minutes! Ideally, you will want to have a few methods on hand for purifying water, beforre you have to resort to improvised methods of purification. There are many survival guides online and in print, even YouTube videos that explain in great detail how to build improvised methods, teaching buushcraft and so forth, but it is best to have something ready to go, that will allow you to get things together the bushcraft way, for longer term if needed. I've listed a number of items below that you may find very handy to this end!
