Did you know that when you see us at a market, we’ve probably been preparing for it for at least six months?

In early spring, I’m already applying for holiday shows, coordinating schedules and staff, and waiting to see if we’re accepted into heavily juried markets.

Once accepted, there are city licenses, product prep, staffing, setup and teardown, and then sales tax filings for the different cities where we sell.

Making the product is one job. Running everything behind the scenes is a whole other one.

So when you shop a local market, you’re supporting far more than what you see on the table. You’re supporting months of work, planning and a small business that is very grateful you stopped by. ❤️

Out of all the mothers in the United States only .35% of mothers are moms ofpediatric cancer kiddos. Ironically, three of us just found ourselves right next to each other as vendors at the Windsor Harvest festival. These are my peeps!

When Xcel Energy has to bring a mini excavator into your backyard for repairs… you turn it into a 5280 Mermaid product shoot. 😂

New profile picture and a new chapter for me and The 5280 Mermaid!

I’m excited to share that I was selected for the Watson Institute’s Environmental Sustainability Entrepreneurship Fellowship, a fully funded 16-week program supporting entrepreneurs who are working to grow their businesses while creating a positive environmental impact.

Over the next few months, I’ll be working with mentors and other entrepreneurs to strengthen The 5280 Mermaid, grow more strategically, and expand our impact while staying true to who we are as a small family business.

I’m excited to see where this next chapter takes us!

Owning a small business means I don’t get away very often. There’s always something that needs to be made, packed, shipped, sold or figured out.

But sometimes you need to step away and remember there’s a whole world outside of work. Family, seafood, beautiful places and a little breathing room.

Turns out this is apparently all it takes to kidnap me.

We give back because I’ve walked this path, and I know how lonely and scary it can feel.

Sometimes giving back is as simple as handing someone going through cancer a bag of soup so they don’t have to think about dinner that night.

It’s a small gesture, but sometimes a small gesture is enough to remind someone they’re not alone.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

I’m not trying to build the biggest business or be the best at everything. I’m just building something I can be proud of, something that supports my family, lets me be creative, and gives us the opportunity to give back along the way.

That feels like success to me.

Some of my favorite people are the vendors I get to work alongside. We show up through the heat, rain, wind, and long days because we love what we do and believe in what we make. Somewhere along the way, we became family. ❤️
