Detective Comics 62 is the FIRST JOKER COVER. Many mistakenly believe it's Detective 40 because the Tec 40 cover is a MODIFIED Joker panel from Batman 1. The modification made what WAS the Joker in the Bat 1 panel appear more like Clayface on the cover of Tec 40. Things that are different are not the same!

Why did DC do this? Bat 1 was going to print before Tec 40 and DC needed another Bat story to complete the book. So, they moved the Bat/Joker story intended for Tec 40 into the Bat 1. Then DC prepared a new story for Tec 40 featuring Clayface to replace the Bat/Joker story they moved to Bat 1.

Now the Tec 40 had a Joker cover that no longer lined up with the Clayface story inside ... so rather than redraw the cover - DC CHANGED THE COVER and recolored what WAS the Joker on the cover of Tec 40 to appear like Clayface. The cover of Tec 40 while similar to the Joker panel in Bat 1 is - NOT THE SAME. Things that are different are not the same.

After re-coloring the cover of Tec 40 - the Joker was NO LONGER the Joker by intent or actual appearance. Therefore - Detective 62 is truly the FIRST Joker cover - not Tec 40.

But wait ... some Bat 11's have earlier news-stand dates than Tec 62 so maybe - just maybe - Batman 11 is the first JOKER cover - LIKE - SHARE and Follow me on Instagram ...

Captain Marvel Adventures #27 (Church Copy)
When Billy Batson shouts "SHAZAM!" he gains:
S-olomon's wisdom,
H-ercules strength,
A-tlas's stamina.
Z-eus power,
A-chilles courage
M-ercury's speed.

So is he Capt. Marvel or SHAZAM? The name confusion comes from a legal dispute. CM was created in 1940 by Fawcett Pub. and subsequently sued by DC Comics. DC claimed CM was too much like their Superman. Was CM a copy of Superman? NO!

Although Superman came first (1938) and there are similarites (hence the lawsuit) - there are also many significant differences. CM is human and Superman is an alien from another planet. CM's power is magic based while Supe's is solar based. CM has a DIFFERENT personality, story line, strengths, weaknesses, costume, and alter ego.

Superman actually copied CM in many ways ...
1. Superman didn't fly at first, but got the ability after CM.
2. Superman's arch-villain, Lex Luthor, is a bald scientist and a copy of CM's arch villain, Dr Sivana, who is a bald scientist.
3. Superboy is a copy of CM's Captain Marvel, Jr.
4. Supergirl is a copy of CM's sister, Mary Marvel.

So why did DC Comics sue Fawcett? MONEY. Fawcett was a financial threat, so DC sued and lost, but DC had the money to appeal. Fawcett didn't have money to fight and was compelled to settle. Fawcett agreed to stop printing Captain Marvel comics.

If Fawcett had not settled they likely would have won and CM/SHAZAM would probably be more popular than Superman.

Wait, there's more! Twenty years after legally killing Captain Marvel DC acquired the rights to the character they litigated out of existence ... BUT, DC only acquired the character, and not his name. Why? Because Marvel Comics had begun to use the CM name trademarking it as their own and given it to an entirely new character.

Sadly, CM is now legally separated from his original name, so DC renamed him SHAZAM after the wizard who grants him his powers. SHAZAM is also the magic word he uses to transform into Captain Marv ... errrr .... SHAZAM.

The real Capt Marvel is not a woman, but the one my dad knew as a boy. The most popular hero of the 40's and 50's. CM sold more comics than any of the others and was more popular than Superman. Now you know the rest of the story...

X-1 In dark & lite green hit the racks in July 1963. Note the 7-2 arrival date on the lite green copy. Did you know X-1 has 9 first appearances?

1. The X-men team
2. Magneto
3. Professor X
4. Cyclops
5. Iceman
6. Beast
7. Angel
8. & 9. Jean Grey as Marvel Girl and who will later become Phoenix

X-1 is always a hot book, but it will get hotter because Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox allows Marvel Studios to regain the rights to the X-Men.

Background – To avoid bankruptcy in the 80's Marvel Studios sold their rights to the X-Men as well as other key properties. Even so, Marvel went on to make, the most successful hero genre films and they did this with their remaining less popular characters like Iron Man.

In 2009 Disney acquired Marvel Studios and their films have become the most profitable theatrical franchise in history.

If only Disney/Marvel could get the characters they sold back in the 80's ... and then it happened. In 2019 Disney/Marvel reacquired from 21st Century Fox - the rights to the X-Men and other popular characters such as the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer .

The combination of the best movie studio having access to the best characters is a win-win!

PS - Avengers 1 hit the stands at the same time as X-1.

Miss Fury beat Wonder Woman to the punch by six months (April 1941) in a comic strip created by FEMALE artist June Tarpé Mills. Miss Fury is the first female hero created and promoted by a woman.

She had no innate superpowers, but gained increased strength and speed when she put on her BLACK PANTHER suit that was used by an African witch doctor in Voodoo ceremonies.

Wait what? Wouldn't that make Miss Fury the first Black Panther in the Marvel Universe? Yes, she was the first in costume - now check out Centaur Comics Stars & Stripes 3 for the first use of the name Black Panther.

Miss Fury #2 is a Classic Golden Age Cover that continues to fly under the radar even though it shares iconic cover elements with books such as Suspense #3 and Detective #31. Notice the color palatte, night scene, full moon, hooded N**i bad guys, gorgeous woman, etc.

Miss Fury might be the most famous superhero you've never heard of.... During WW2, she graced the nose of four bombers and her cat, Perri-Purr, sailed on the Admiral's Flagship for the Pacific Fleet. She was also the unofficial mascot for the Allied troops. "Miss Fury was syndicated in 100 newspapers running from '41 to '51.

Timely (Marvel Comics) was selling a million copies an issue ... but so very few copies remain.

Ironically, Superman actually copied or came after CM in many ways ...
1. Superman didn't fly at first, but got the ability after CM did.
2. Superman's arch-villain, Lex Luthor, was a bald scientist who copied CM's arch villain, Dr Sivana, who was a bald headed scientist.
3. Superboy copied CM's Captain Marvel, Jr.
4. Supergirl copied CM's sister, Mary Marvel.

If the two heroes are that unique then why did DC Comics sue Fawcett? MONEY.

Fawcett was a financial threat, so DC took them to court and get this ... DC actually lost, but had the money to appeal. Fawcett didn't have money to fight and was compelled to settle. Fawcett agreed to stop printing Captain Marvel comics.

If Fawcett had not settled they probably would have won and - CM/SHAZAM would probably be the major superhero of today - NOT Superman.

Wonder Woman first appeared in All Star #8, but not on the cover. She had a small face image on #11 but it wasn't until issue #12 that DC put Amazing Amazon prominently front & center on the "V for Victory" cover. Wonder Woman's arms are raised to form a V inside a V.

This is the only time DC used the color pink in an All Star masthead - check it out. Is "Comics" colored pink in the logo as an homage to WW becoming the JSA Secretary? I think so.

This copy is "WON" of the very best.

Shang-Chi Master of Kung Fu first appears in Special Marvel Edition #15. Well centered copies with both the code stamp and Yin/Yang circle fully on the cover with no white on the spine are much tougher to find. Superman! He's not a Sissy or a Cream Puff! This wonderful cover from 1944 is so creative and under appreciated. Notice how the title is essential to the cover art as it ties into the Circus High Striker. Can you think of another comic that combines the cover title with the cover art? Superman 31 is unique in this regard. Exciting Comics - LIKE - FOLLOW - SHARE🙂
