Like a good cup of coffee, a good satin nitro finish can be neither too coarse nor too fine. If you don't wet sand enough, all the scratches from the low grit paper will remain visible. If you go for a high buff, you get a glossy finish even with "satin" lacquer. The trick is to go up to a high grit polish that gives some shine close up, but flattens out from a distance. In our case, working from 220 grit all the way up to 3,200 grit. The natural removal of the scratches produces luster, but without a trip to the buffing wheel the dampening agents in the lacquer keep it a silky satin.

After allowing the clear coat to settle and offgass, its time to start working through the gritsm getting a high-gloss mirror finish is tedious work, but we'll worth it in the end. The entire guitar goes through a process starting at 400 grit and ending at 1,000 grit before buff and polish.

While the "Traditions Burst" JDC may look fine on its own after color, its when you expose the cream binding underneath that it really pops. This one is gonna be something special once it gets clear coat.

Once color and lacquer starts getting layed down, that's when you really get to see a guitar come to life. You can witness the character and final product finally begin to take form, telling you what it wants to be in the end. This JDC Semi-Hollow in particular is getting a "Traditions Burst", a subtle tip of the hat to classic color schemes with a Golden Amber Bock center leading into a chocolate burst with a hint of burgandy.

This Martin J-1 has seen quite a bit of h***y tonkin' and as a result was starting to come apart at the seams. The binding was missing and the top plate had begun to separate from the kerfing. Rather than trying to match new binding, all the old binding was cut away, the top plate reglued, and new tortoise shell celluloid binding installed. A light dust of satin lacquer and a setup and its ready to play again.
