is unusual in many respects; it has a name few people can pronounce and even fewer can spell. But what makes Bucyrus Copper Kettle Works truly unique is the continued tradition of handmade copper items in the same location at 119 South Walnut Street in Bucyrus, Ohio for more than 147 years. For the past 140 years, ownership of the company moved through four generations of the founder’s family unti

l the death of the family matriarch in July 2015 at age 99. Thereafter, the company continued operations to fulfill existing orders and then, in accordance with her wishes as the last of her family line, closed the original business and retired the family name. Interested parties may visit the shop. Pre-arrangements are necessary for these visits. It is important to the coppersmiths at Bucyrus Copper Kettle Works, Ltd. that visitors can see the rich variety of products made by hand in a tradition that continues in this shop since shortly after the Civil War.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Copper Kettle Works Temporarily Closed

Dear Friends,

For those who may not yet have heard: we at the Bucyrus Copper Kettle Works experienced a real scare this morning with a fire in our structure’s attic.

What followed was a powerful reminder of the strength of this community. Local firefighters, joined by crews from surrounding areas, responded quickly and contained the fire with what appears to be minimal damage. Because of their skill and teamwork, this important piece of Bucyrus history still stands.

As we take the necessary time to work with the fire department, insurance providers, and others to fully assess the situation, the Copper Kettle Works will be closed for at least the next couple of weeks. If you have a scheduled tour or other business in process, a member of our staff will reach out early next week with updates and rescheduling options.

Moments like this show the heart of Bucyrus, Crawford County and beyond. The outpouring of care and concern we have already received is a testament to a community that values its history and stands together when it matters most. We are deeply grateful for you.

With appreciation,
Bucyrus Copper Kettle Works Team

🛠️✨ Proud Moment for Bucyrus History! ✨🛠️

We're happy to share that our historic National Register marker at the Bucyrus Copper Kettle Works has received a fresh cleanup and now shines brightly once again! This plaque proudly recognizes our building's significant place in American industrial heritage.

The D. Picking and Company building (now home to the Bucyrus Copper Kettle Works Museum) was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 11, 1974. Built in 1873, this living landmark has been the site of hand-hammered copper kettle production since 1874—making it one of the oldest continuously operating workshops of its kind in the nation!

We're committed to preserving this piece of living history for future generations.
Come visit us, see the original tools and processes in action, and experience over 150 years of heritage firsthand!

Exciting News from Bucyrus Copper Kettle Works! 🛠️✨

We’re thrilled to welcome Cohen Knapp as our Summer 2026 Workforce Ready Intern!

Cohen will be a senior at Colonel Crawford High School and is participating in Pioneers welding program. He’s already hard at work learning the traditional coppersmith trade — from hands-on hammering to the time-honored techniques that have made our copper kettles legendary since 1874.

We are fortunate to have Cohen with us through Crawford Partnership’s Workforce Ready Intern Program, in collaboration with The Community Foundation for Crawford County.

Cohen, thank you for bringing your energy and work ethic to the kettle. We’re excited to watch you grow in this unique craft and contribute to preserving America’s last handcrafted copper kettle business.

Stay tuned for updates on Cohen’s journey this summer!

☀️ A big THANK YOU to our wonderful volunteers!

This past Saturday, several dedicated volunteers came out for a much-needed cleanup day at the Copper Kettle. While we didn’t manage to snap a group photo, we did catch volunteer, Mark Makeever, at work cleaning all the windows so the sunshine can shine through! ✨

Running a working museum takes many hands, and we’re so grateful for every person who rolls up their sleeves to help preserve this piece of American history.

Thank you, Mark, and thank you to all our volunteers ! 🙌 Who else would like to join the volunteer efforts? Drop a comment or message us!

🎉 What an incredible day at the Bucyrus Copper Kettle!

We had the pleasure of welcoming over 90 energetic 3rd graders from Wynford Schools — Wynford Royals! — on a special field trip. The students visited the Bucyrus Copper Kettle Museum, the Bucyrus Historical Society , and the Bucyrus Public Library.

These kids were fantastic! They were attentive and asked some thoughtful questions. You could see the excitement as they learned about our local history.

A huge THANK YOU to all the teachers and chaperones who kept the group organized and on schedule — you made the day run smoothly and helped make it a success!

They came, they saw, they learned… and our mission was fully achieved:
To preserve, promote, and educate the public about the historical significance, artistry, and innovation of copper kettle manufacturing.

📸 Photos of all four classes are posted — tag your favorite Wynford students and teachers!
