A Weekend in the Life of a Rooftop Tent Family

Some families measure a good weekend by how far they got on the trail or how many s'mores got made around the fire. For a rooftop tent family, it usually starts a lot simpler than that: pack the car, pick a spot, and let the weekend unfold from there. Here's what that actually looks like.

Friday: The Escape
The week ends, and instead of the usual scramble to figure out where to go, the car's already half-packed because a rooftop tent family doesn't have to think too hard about gear. No stakes to dig out of the garage, no tarp to untangle, no mystery poles missing from last summer. Just load the coolers, buckle in the kids, and go. By the time everyone else is still deciding whether the trip is worth the hassle, you're already pulling into camp.

Setting Up Without the Meltdown
Anyone who's set up a ground tent with kids underfoot knows the drill — someone's holding a flashlight wrong, someone's standing exactly where a stake needs to go, and somehow it always takes twice as long as it should. With a rooftop tent, setup takes minutes. Pop the latches, unfold the tent, extend the ladder, done. The kids are already asking what's for dinner before the "tent building" portion of most other families' evenings has even started.

Dinner, Games, and an Actual View
Once camp is set, the evening opens up. No lingering exhaustion from a stressful setup, no daylight burned fighting with gear. Just dinner around the fire, a card game at the table, and a decent stretch of daylight left to actually enjoy the spot you picked instead of just recovering from getting there.

Bedtime Is Genuinely Easier
Here's an underrated perk: kids love climbing a ladder into their own little loft! What might be a fight to get into a sleeping bag at ground level turns into an adventure when it means climbing up into "their spot" above the car. It's elevated, it's cozy, and it somehow makes bedtime feel like part of the fun instead of the end of it.

Saturday: More Trip, Less Chore
The best part of a rooftop tent weekend is what doesn't happen, no soggy tent floor to deal with after a little morning dew, no re-staking anything that shifted overnight, no slow unpacking-and-repacking process eating into the day. Breakfast happens, the day's activities happen, and camp is still standing exactly the way you left it, ready for round two that night.

Sunday: Packing Up Without the Drama
Breaking camp is usually where a weekend trip starts to feel like work again. Not here. Fold the tent and the ladder, latch the tent, and the "packing up" process that used to eat half a morning is done in a few minutes. More time for one last hike, one last swim, or just a slower drive home instead of a rushed one.

The Bottom Line
A rooftop tent doesn't just make camping easier, it changes the shape of the whole weekend. Less time spent on setup and teardown means more time actually doing the things that made you want to go camping in the first place. For a family, that trade-off is worth more than almost any other gear upgrade you could make.

The Journey Continues: Honoring the Past, Building the Future

Every great adventure begins with someone willing to take the first step. For HITents, that person was Graham Holloway.

Long before rooftop tents became as popular as they are today, Graham believed there was a better way to help people experience the outdoors. He built equipment that people could depend on and gear designed to help families and adventurers spend more time exploring the places that matter most.

In doing so, he built more than a company. He built a brand, a community, and a reputation founded on quality, integrity, and a genuine passion for the outdoors. Today, my wife and I are honored to have been entrusted with carrying that legacy forward as the next stewards of HITents. Before looking ahead, I want to say one thing.

Thank you, Graham.

Thank you for your vision, your hard work, and for building a brand that has earned the trust of so many in the overlanding community. The foundation you've created is something I'm proud to build upon.

When the opportunity to continue the HITents journey came along, it wasn't simply a business decision. It was an opportunity to carry forward a brand whose values closely align with my own. A company can build products, but a brand is built through people, the customers who trust it, the community that supports it, and the people behind it who care deeply about doing things the right way. That philosophy will remain at the heart of HITents.

As we move into this next chapter, our commitment remains unchanged: build dependable products, provide exceptional customer support, and help more people experience the freedom of life outdoors. You'll see continued investment in new products, continued elevation in the customer journey, and resources that help our customers get the most from every adventure.

To our customers, thank you for your trust and support. Whether you've been with HITents for years or are just discovering us, we're grateful to have you as part of this community!

And to Graham, thank you for entrusting me with the future of HITents. I don't take that responsibility lightly, and I'm excited to continue building on everything you've started!

Every adventure has a trailhead. Graham built the path that brought HITents here. My wife and I are honored to continue the journey and see where the trail leads next. See you around the campfire.
