GREAT AUTUMN SEDGE (Pycnopsyche). One of the larger species of Caddis is the GREAT AUTUMN SEDGE (Pycnopsyche), which just happens to hatch from August to October (early-mid Fall). It is quite possibly the most important source of Trout food (pupae and adults) on many streams this time of year. While the larvae are fairly inconsequential, being that they are encompassed in stick cases most of the year, the large amber pupae and adults are a whole different story. The best dry fly (adult caddis) fishing is in the early mornings and evenings; and using a Ginger Diving Caddis wet fly as a dropper can be a killer combination, as the adult caddis dives under the water surface to lay its eggs.

TERRESTRIAL SEASON !!! Once again, it's that time of year for some of the most exciting fishing of the season. For the most part, trout, bass, and sunfish are feeding opportunistically at your favorite creek, river, or pond. At this time of the year, when the streams are typically lower and clearer, fly-fishing can actually be a little easier; fewer worries about matching the hatch, and the trout lairs are a lot easier to spot. It's common to cover a whole lot of stream by avoiding the now obvious dead-water. Nothing like wet wading in a pair of shorts up through the middle of creek bouncing BEETLES off of rocks; or drifting ANTS down a slow-flowing riffle; slapping a HOPPER or CRICKET near an overhanging bank; or casting a bright-green INCHWORM under a canopy of trees. And not just for Trout; Smallmouth and Panfish are extremely active on the surface in the late Summer months. It's hard to beat deep-fried, beer-battered, bluegill fillets.

"WHAT ARE YOUR QUILL BODIED (QB) FLIES ?", is one of the questions we are asked most. If you browse through our catalog, you will find many of our Flies annotated with a QB next to the pattern. These flies are tied specifically to be ultra realistic in both color and design. Take a look at the pictures provided to see just what goes into creating these patterns.
First, we take large Rooster feathers (from the rooster neck or saddle) and strip the fibers from the center quill. Unlike other Shops and Providers, we do this manually, with no bleach, using only the largest and thickest diameter quills from handpicked Prime Necks.
Next, after bundling the quills, we personally dye them from recipes that we have developed through trial and error, matching the colors of Mayfly samples that we have collected from our streams.
The finished product is a lifelike fly in both color and segmentation. Whether it be the pinkish tan of the adult HENDRICKSON, the brilliant orange-cast yellow body of the SULPHUR Dun, or the pale green body of the spent-winged BLUE QUILL SPINNER.

The CINNAMON CADDIS (Ceratopsyche); one of the most common and important Caddisflies to the fisherman. Not only do they hatch in large numbers and are found on many trout streams, but have a long emergence span of May through September. The CINNAMON CADDIS emerges mainly in the evening during the summer months but begin morning and afternoon emergence in the later, cooler, months. During the emergence cycle, the pupa drift for a long time before reaching the surface; once reaching the surface, they also take a long time to struggle free from their pupal shucks. This is an ideal situation for the flyfisherman using wet flies, soft hackles, or pupae patterns. The adult Ceratopsyche lays it eggs by diving under the water in both evening and morning hours.

Ephoron leukon, or the WHITE MAYFLY (aka WHITE FLY). One of the most famous August-Sept Mayfly Hatches; just ask anybody who lives or drives near the Susquehanna or Yellow Breeches Creek. The WHITE MAYFLY, often simply called the White Fly, is readily found hatching this time of year on many streams, but not always in the phenomenal numbers found on the previously mentioned waterways. The best hatches occur on warm evenings, about an hour before dark, with water temps in the high-60's to low 70's.
If the water temperature is unseasonably cool, the adult duns may have difficulty taking flight, providing an all-you-can-eat buffet for trout and smallmouth. Once hatched, moulting (skin-shed), mating, and egg-laying, typically all take place within an hour; so fishing the WHITE MAYFLY dry fly alongside the Spinner can be productive. During heavy hatches, the water's surface can literally be covered with the spent-winged Spinners.

The most popular Mayfly hatch of the Summer, the SLATE DRAKE (Isonychia). The Slate Drake is a large dark mayfly that hatches on many trout streams from May through September (one of the longer mayfly emerging spans). Being a fastwater species, it inhabits the stream's riffles and pocketwater. The nymphs are strong & swift swimmers, and are actually carnivorous. At the time of the hatch, which is evenings in the Summer and afternoon in the Fall, the Isonychia nymph typically migrates to rocks or logs that are exposed (above the waterline); however, in times of high water, they simply emerge on the water surface typical of most mayflies. By early evening to dusk, the spinner fall occurs over the same water from which they emerged.

The LITTLE GREEN SEDGE (Cheumatopsyche) Caddis emerges from June through late-September and is one of the most abundant caddisflies on North America trout streams. It inhabits all types of streams including those areas where nutrient pollution exists (farm/pasture streams). We offer this dry fly pattern in sizes 14-18, at $ 1.20 ea or $13.80/doz. If you prefer fishing under the surface, we recommend our BROWN & GREEN DIVING CADDIS wet fly or the STARLING & HERL Soft Hackle. The LONG HORNED SEDGE (Oecetis), a Caddis species whose emergence and egg-laying periods are spread out from late-Spring into early-October, prefer slower water habitats. YELLOW DRAKE (Ephemera varia), is one of the largest mayflies of the summer fly-fishing season as well as one of the most important flies for late-summer fishermen, hatching from June-August. The adult is a large fly (size 10 or 12) that few trout will pass up. The YELLOW DRAKE resides in a variety of habitat, from swift mountain streams, limestone springs, to slow flowing rivers. The hatching usually occurs around sundown, but can be earlier on overcast days. An hour or two before the hatch, fishing the nymph can be extremely productive as they move about preparing to emerge on the water's surface. Luckily for the fisherman, the large adults tend to stay on the water for an extended period of time, awaiting their freshly emerged, large, wings to dry before they can take flight. Our PINK CAHILL (Epeorus vitreus). One of the popular Summer Mayfly hatches; reliably hatching from June through August. The Pink Cahill often inhabit slower, meandering streams with gravel beds. The hatch can be dramatic with the adult mayfly (dry fly) becoming airborne quickly, after only a short drift from shedding it's nymphal shuck.
