Transcending the boundaries between tradition and innovation, architecture and ecosystem, building and landscape, architects Weiss/Manfredi's addition to the historical Longwood Gardens Conservatory reinterprets classical greenhouse design and reinvigorates a privileged place within the expansive site. Litelab worked with Lighting Designer Tillotson Design Associates to develop a flexible lighting infrastructure capable of capturing this magical space by rendering organic form in all its complexity, while dematerializing building volume to emphasize the structural exuberance of the green-house. The result is a truly revolutionary building.

The integration of daylighting into museum settings must balance the complexities of natural light, exhibition and conservation. When working with any natural material (even light), designers are confronted with extreme variability. This variability not only adds depth and nuance to a design, but it also creates its own unique challenges, especially when combined with sensitive collections and the demands of museum presentation.

The Joslyn art museum creates a perfect balance between natural and artificial lighting, creating bright, open and comfortable spaces in which the materially and chromatically rich artifacts of the Josyln collection can be enjoyed in depth.

Congratulations to the Arup team for realizing such a wonderful project and for honorable mention in this year’s Lumen Awards!

Philadelphia is a city close to our hearts, where we have been honored to work with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of the American Revolution, the Barnes Foundation, the Rodin Museum, and most recently, Calder Gardens.

We’re excited to share that select Litelab power distribution products have achieved a Declare label from the International Living Future Institute (ILFI)!

Declare labels provide clear disclosure of product ingredients, helping architects, designers, and sustainability leaders make informed material choices aligned with healthy building goals. This milestone reflects Litelab’s commitment to transparent supply chains and responsible material selection, supporting project teams pursuing advanced frameworks such as Living Building Challenge and LEED. As material health becomes an increasingly important consideration in building design, transparency around product ingredients is critical for advancing healthier buildings. We’re proud to support the design community in this effort and look forward to continuing to improve material health and transparency.

Litelab worked with Lighting Designer to develop a custom linear LED system for the MoMA Design Store. The Litelab system has linear LED downlights producing up to 1770 Lumens / ft. with high (95) CRI, producing a bright, vibrant environment. BusRun power distribution in the upper channel provides infrastructure for high output, high CRI spotlights, to highlight and emphasize merchandize. The system functions aesthetically like a baffle, masking architectural services above, while redirecting visual interest to the displays below.

Calder once described his mobiles as fields of “deployed nuclei” creating an “atmospheric condition.” Through their interaction with space and time, Calder’s works (whether stabile or mobile) evolves, embracing infinite permutations based on itinerate transformations. Calder Gardens designed by Herzog & de Meuron with lighting design by FLUX Studio provides a landscape for such evolution. Similar in design to English picturesque gardens, the space unfolds in promenade, with folies providing moments of surprise and discovery.

In 1975, Rick Spaulding co-founded Litelab—what began as a theatrical lighting distribution company soon became a force in the world of design and innovation.

From lighting nightclubs during the golden age of disco (yes, they supplied components to Studio 54!) to weathering the crash of that era in 1980, Litelab pivoted with purpose. The challenge pushed the team to explore new frontiers—museums and high-end retail.

The turning point? Inventing the Busway system, a game-changing lighting solution that made Litelab a trusted partner for museums worldwide.

By 1998, Litelab was lighting up the Museum of Modern Art in NYC and working with top global brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, and Ralph Lauren.

Don’t miss Willem de Kooning: Endless Painting, opening April 15, 2025, at the newly renovated Chelsea space. Curated by Cecilia Alemani and supported by The Willem de Kooning Foundation, the exhibition spans four decades of the artist’s work—including key loans from MoMA and the Guggenheim.
