The integration of daylighting into museum settings must balance the complexities of natural light, exhibition and conservation. When working with any natural material (even light), designers are confronted with extreme variability. This variability not only adds depth and nuance to a design, but it also creates its own unique challenges, especially when combined with sensitive collections and the demands of museum presentation.

The Joslyn art museum creates a perfect balance between natural and artificial lighting, creating bright, open and comfortable spaces in which the materially and chromatically rich artifacts of the Josyln collection can be enjoyed in depth.

Congratulations to the Arup team for realizing such a wonderful project and for honorable mention in this year’s Lumen Awards!

Declare labels provide clear disclosure of product ingredients, helping architects, designers, and sustainability leaders make informed material choices aligned with healthy building goals. This milestone reflects Litelab’s commitment to transparent supply chains and responsible material selection, supporting project teams pursuing advanced frameworks such as Living Building Challenge and LEED. As material health becomes an increasingly important consideration in building design, transparency around product ingredients is critical for advancing healthier buildings. Litelab worked with Lighting Designer to develop a custom linear LED system for the MoMA Design Store. The Litelab system has linear LED downlights producing up to 1770 Lumens / ft. with high (95) CRI, producing a bright, vibrant environment. BusRun power distribution in the upper channel provides infrastructure for high output, high CRI spotlights, to highlight and emphasize merchandize. The system functions aesthetically like a baffle, masking architectural services above, while redirecting visual interest to the displays below.
