Genuine Leather vs. Top Grain Leather — What’s the Difference? 🐂

You may have heard the terms genuine leather and top grain leather, but they don’t mean the same thing.

Genuine leather is a broad term for leather that is made from real animal hide, but it can come from lower layers of the hide and may be heavily processed, sanded, or coated. “Genuine” simply means it’s real leather — it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the highest quality.

Top grain leather comes from the upper portion of the hide, just below the outer surface. It retains more of the hide’s natural grain, making it strong, durable, and naturally beautiful. It can develop a rich patina and character as it ages.
