Meg's kiddo is back to school today! This year has has such a staggered start, we weren't quite sure which day was the "Happy Back to School" day 🤣

But maybe we can say it for sure now!

Happy back to school!

21 years ago, Meg stepped behind a teacher desk for the first time. She taught 3rd grade at St. Angela's school in Mattapan, MA. (A neighborhood of Boston)

5 years ago, she traded the teacher desk for a front desk at the shop!

But if there's one thing that has been consistent, it's been Meg's passion for getting books in the hands of kids

Whether you are coming into the shop with your family, or you are a school or business looking to partner, we've got a team ready to help!

So happy back to school and we'll see you soon!

Meg here!

This summer I was able to visit THREE children's bookstores - all bucket list bookstores for me. We are a strong and mighty crew, us children's bookstores, and I hope to visit them all!

I was able to stop by the iconic Wild Rumpus Books in Minneapolis. Folks, they have SO many pets.

I also had time to stop by Red Balloon Books. They have a beautiful sculpture out front (got my wheels turning!) AND a piano.

The other children's bookstore I visited was Ratty Books in the Catskills. The owner clearly has deep knowledge of children's books. There were books I have never seen in any other bookstore ever.

In other travels, I ended up in Seattle for a brief 36 hours but managed to squeeze in three bookstores: Left Bank Books at Pike Place Market, Queen Anne Book Company, and Book Larder. Very different vibes but that's the beauty of indie bookstores!

My last "bookstore" was at Spruceton Inn - a glorious motel in the Catskills run by Casey Sciezka. She and her husband Steven Weinberg both published books in the last year so while staying at the motel, I was able to snag signed copies of "The Fountain" (by Casey) and "I Am the Mountain" and "The Fly Fishing Book" by Steven. If you are ever looking for the exact perfect grown up vacation, head to this gorgeous space. No cell phone reception, the world's nicest people, mountains, springs, fresh air. 10/10 stars on that one.

The books I read? Well, I read A LOT of books that are coming out this fall. You can swipe through to see them. One grown up book that comes out in January, "Record Lows" by CJ Green is a family/Italian mafia story that takes place during the Blizzard of '77 here in WNY. Can't wait to share with you all!

At a customer recommendation, our family started a light-hearted murder series for kids (yes, that's a thing) called "Montgomery Bonbon." If you love Murdle books, you'll love these.

I also managed to throw in a few books just for me. I think my favorite of the crew was "Country People" by Daniel Mason but dang I loved Joan Didion's book so much.

Ok, that's my wrap up. Drop your favorite summer bookstores/reads in the comments!

Last week, our team created a new section in the bookstore - our Young Teen Books! Why, you ask? Great question!

1. Our sections skipped from 13 years old to grown ups 🤔
2. The readers who were reading chapter books when we opened are now on to bigger things!
3. We needed to fill that gap.

So, welcome to our Young Teen Books section. This is geared toward teens ages 12 to 15. You'll find that the characters in these books are in 8th grade through 10th grade. The content is a little bit older than our typical middle school books but not quite as mature as our young adult books.

We've created new sections for these teens and we're excited to grow our collection! We've started with some of our favorites and books highly recommended by others.

Do you have a book suggestion that will fit this new shelf? Let us know in the comments!

P.S. Fear not, young chapter book readers. The books you love that were once here are still in the shop! They are between the picture books and graphic novels. :)
