New CDC data on mold is making headlines. Here's what it actually means — and what it doesn't.

For the first time, the CDC has measured how often invasive mold disease shows up in U.S. hospitals: about 450 cases across four Atlanta hospitals over five years. The findings were sobering — roughly 45% of patients died within 90 days, and Aspergillus, a mold most of us inhale every day, caused 71% of infections. More than 1 in 3 patients had none of the classic risk factors doctors are trained to watch for.

Important context: this severe, invasive infection overwhelmingly strikes people who are already seriously ill. A musty shower is not about to send a healthy person to the ICU.

But "you probably won't get an invasive infection" is very different from "mold is harmless." The EPA is clear that mold can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs of both allergic and non-allergic people. How well your body handles it is deeply individual — and children, older adults, and anyone run-down sit at the higher-risk end. Mold simply isn't good for anyone to breathe.

The takeaway isn't fear. It's a plan:

▪️ Control moisture first — fix leaks fast, dry any water damage within 24–48 hours, and keep humidity in check. No air cleaner replaces removing the water mold needs to grow.
