Gattinara wines come from about 70 miles north of Barbaresco as the crow, looking for good Nebbiolo wines, flies. That noble grape takes the name “Spanna” in this part of Piemonte. The Vallana family makes highly-regarded wines, easily worthy of comparison to the Big B’s.

If you find warm climate reds to be too low in acidity, check out a bottle of this Frapatto. It’s grown in a cooler-than-normal site in Sicily. Perfect for oily fish such as tuna, salmon and swordfish. Pair it with grilled pork chops, tomato-sauced pastas, etc.

Here’s a dry white wine from Hungary that’s made mostly of the Furmint grape with about 10% Hárslevelű. Even if that’s difficult to spell, it’s dangerously easy to drink. Pair it with Asian cuisine where there’s a drop of sesame oil. It’ll handle chili oil, as well. This is a perfect wine for the warm weather we’re having.

The Offida region in Le Marche is below the radar of most wine consumers, but it’s worth discovering. The Velenosi family makes some really good wines, with a couple of them being exceptional values. This beautifully aromatic white is outstanding and it’s a well-priced crowd pleaser!

In the 1970s and 1980s, most Brunello wines were rough and acidic, needing decades to be drinkable. Winemaking has changed and one of the leading lights is Siro Pacenti, whose wines are beautifully polished and eminently drinkable. This is a very elegant Sangiovese.

Organically-farmed vineyards. Native yeast fermentation.
Long skin contact. No small oak barrels and no new wood. Unfiltered, too. Sangiovese mostly with 5% Canaiolo, no Cabernet, Merlot or Syrah. This is the real deal and you get your money’s worth!

The winery was founded in 2007 and they are regarded as an old-school producer. Winemaker Federico Oberto was the cellar man for 35 vintages at the winery of Renato Ratti before deciding he was too young to be retired and launching this project with his son and a friend of theirs. Every wine we’ve tasted from these guys has been a winner! Limited availability, though.

So many consumers think wines with a bit of sweetness are déclassé. When you have foods that have some heat from spicy peppers, a wine tends to show itself differently and the sugar disappears. We saw this the other night with some spicy Himalayan dishes. This was gorgeous and it’s a bargain!

When they’re on target, Sonoma Zinfandels have a decidedly distinctive regional character. Dry Creek Zin can be brambly and a bit peppery. The cooler climate Russian River Valley often displays red berry fruit and a mildly floral tone. Gamba’s 2023 captures those elements beautifully.
Don’t miss it, especially at our sale price.
