Come in and gear up for Steelhead season at Holiday Sports...We dont just talk outdoor sports... we participate... how about you?

The early winter-run hatchery steelhead season is right around the corner in Western Washington, with catches typically ramping up around Thanksgiving and continuing through January, or into February at certain terminal areas near hatcheries.

Some Westside rivers are also still seeing catches of summer-run steelhead following recent rain, like these two nice fish checked last week near our Reiter Ponds Hatchery on the Skykomish River. These fish are the offspring of the integrated broodstock summer steelhead program that began smolt releases in early 2022.

Integrated hatchery programs collect and spawn wild fish as part of the hatchery broodstock to incorporate local genetics. We’re excited to see these "broodstock steelhead" returning and being caught!

Anglers accessing the Skykomish River at the Reiter Ponds Hatchery should be aware that additional rearing tanks and other facilities have been installed on the property to support the new broodstock program. Construction is underway on a fence to help direct anglers and other visitors around the production area and down to the river access. All visitors are asked to please be cautious during construction and avoid interfering with hatchery or maintenance work.
