🐝 Bee In The Know

August is abuzz!
Our bees & butterflies depend on late-blooming wildflowers as summer begins winding down.
Plants like the Bee Balm mentioned in our last newsletter, asters and other late bloomers provide much-needed forage, so consider leaving a little corner of the yard to grow wild for our tiny neighbors!

Did you know?
Toe Cane Beekeepers Association supports bees and beekeepers throughout Yancey, Mitchell & Avery counties! They even maintain an educational apiary at Mayland Community College where folks can get hands-on experience with honey bees.

🌷 WILD FLOWER WISDOM

Speaking of us, the Gladiolus was my Mamas Mommas favorite flower and it happens to be the flower of August!
This bulb, pictured left, is one of the best to plant for pollinators due to their bright colors, sweet nectar & trumpet like blooms. Bees love the soft hues like pink while hummingbirds adore the deeper reds & oranges.
As long as they’re planted in good soil & get that cold snap they need, they come right up and well around most every corner in the Appalachian mountains!
In fact, it’s been a beloved garden bloom here for generations.
Like all plants, they are more than just pretty but also useful! Its parts can be used to treat venomous bites, headaches, convulsions arthritis & more!

Folk at the turn of the 19th century known as the Victorians, in their language of flowers, used it to express infatuation & also to say:
“You have pierced my heart.”
It symbolizes strength, faithfulness, remembrance & sincerity.

Gladiolus’ are in the Iris family and have a rich history spanning thousands of years. This flower is known as the sword lily, named from the Latin “gladius,” mirroring its blade-shaped leaves and deep ties to the strength of Roman gladiators.

They sure stand sharp in the morning dew!

Lil poem I wrote during Saturdays storm ⛈️
“There’s something magic in that rain, that soil.
The Clays & Michahs in the old steep hollers, even tricklin’ down the streets of Main.”

🐝 THE LOCAL BUZZ

As I start this half of our newsletter, I’m enjoying the late afternoon breeze in town during our 70th Annual Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair!
The skilled crafters, food & community are always a delight. Thank you all.
Summer is almost to an end here in our mountains. Round here, though, things are just getting started. There’s not much better than a good ol’ boot stomp & fun community gatherings!

Here are some current local happenings:

• PATH is hosting another family activity day for their Sizzlin Summer Series - August 15th, 10-2pm @ Town Square! Be there or be Square!

• On the same morning Plott Hound Books will feature Storytime & Book Signing with childrens author Sabrina Ehlenberger @ 11am.

• Build Your Own Boat Race by NC Outdoor Adventures. Race your handmade boat down the North Toe River, enjoy an outdoor movie and hotdogs with friends & family starting @ 4pm August 29th!

• Old Sap live at the NuWray Hotel on August 21st @ 9pm.

• Rick Hornyak & The Highway Companions
live at Homeplace Beer Company
August 21st @ 7pm.

• Watermelon Crawl- Same Place, Same Time- The next night! August 22nd @ 7pm.
Homeplace will feature an end of summer celebration with line dancing, food specials by Hog Hollow & live music by Cody Fair

• Rhythm Rockits will play live at the NuWray on August 28th @ 6pm.

In late July, a local coffee shop on the far end of East Main Street moved and are now selling delicious coffee treats at The Jukebox on the corner of Town Square!
Pop in for a cup or a morning jam session! 🎸☕️

P.S. by the time I drafted this I’d walked home just in time for the late afternoon storm to come on down.
It sure has been misty & muddy in these mountain creeks.
