Fluorite is found in many places around the world. Just to name a few….China, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England, Norway, Mexico. As well as both the Province of Ontario and New Found-land and Labrador in Canada. Within Africa Kenya, Great Rift Valley are localities. In the United States, Missouri, Oklahoma, Illinois, Kentucky, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Ohio, New Hampshire, New York, Alaska and Texas.

Today for Science & Soul, we’re talking about a true American legend: Fluorite from Cave-in-Rock, Illinois. 🇺🇸💎

If you’re a collector, you know that this area in Hardin County is world-renowned. In fact, Fluorite is so important here that it was named the Official State Mineral of Illinois back in 1965!

The Science:
What makes Cave-in-Rock Fluorite so famous? It’s the perfection. This region produced some of the highest-quality Fluorite ever found, known for its incredible 'color zoning.' Some present amazing 'phantoms'—distinct squares of deep purple inside a honey-yellow cube. This happened because the chemistry of the hydrothermal fluids changed as the crystal grew 330 million years ago, leaving behind a 'growth ring' of color.

Most of the big mines closed in the 90s, so any piece you find today is a piece of history!

The Soul:
Because of its rich history and beautiful layers, Cave-in-Rock Fluorite is known as a stone of Legacy and Inner Structure.

We are so lucky to have a few 'old stock' pieces from this legendary location here at the Appalachian Rock Shop. Come see why geologists and seekers alike have been obsessed with this spot for decades!

Have you ever noticed that Fluorite can look like two completely different minerals depending on where it is found? Today for Science & Soul, we’re comparing our favorites from Mexico and China!

The Science:
Locality is everything in geology!
Mexican Fluorite is famous for its 'crackled' texture. Those tiny, intricate lines aren't breaks—they’re actually caused by Calcite inclusions that grew right along with the Fluorite. You’ll usually see these in deep, moody purples and greens, often polished into slabs to show off that 'shattered glass' look.

Chinese Fluorite is the 'gemmy' cousin. It’s known for incredible transparency and 'zoning'—where you can see distinct layers of different colors inside a single crystal. It loves to grow in complex geometric shapes like cubes and octahedrons, looking like nature’s own 3D art project.

The Soul:
Different textures bring different vibes!
The Mexican Fluorite is all about 'Strength in the Cracks.' It reminds us that our inclusions and history make us beautiful and unique. It’s a great stone for grounding and resilience.

The Chinese Fluorite is about 'Mental Clarity.' Because it’s so transparent and structured, it’s used to clear the 'fog' in our minds and help us see our path forward with total precision.

Which vibe are you drawn to today? The deep, crackled mystery of Mexico or the crystal-clear structure of China?

Cobalt Calcite (or Cobaltoan Calcite)
The Science:
Is it dyed? Nope! That jaw-dropping magenta pink is entirely natural. Cobalt Calcite (or Cobaltoan Calcite) gets its "neon" hue when the element Cobalt hitches a ride during the crystal's formation, replacing the usual Calcium. It often grows in "botryoidal" (grape-like) clusters or as tiny, shimmering druzy crystals that catch the light from every angle. It’s a rare and stunning example of how a single element can completely transform a mineral!

The Soul:
Looking to invite a little more "Heart Energy" into your space? 💖 Cobalt Calcite is the ultimate stone for Self-Love and Compassion. Its vibrant pink color is a reminder to be gentle with yourself and find joy in the little things. It’s used to help clear emotional blockages and turn "stagnant" feelings into a flow of positive energy. If you’re on a journey of healing or just want a reminder of how beautiful resilience can be, this sparkling pink gem is for you.

We have a few of these rare pink beauties at the Appalachian Rock Shop right now! Zoom in a little on that big piece.... you might just spot some Erythrite crystals too!

Is it Calcite? or a slice of sunshine ☀️
The Science: 🧪
Did you know that Honeycomb Calcite was officially named the State Stone of Utah in 2021? Found deep in the Uinta Mountains, this unique variety formed about 500 million years ago.

While most Calcite is a bit delicate, this variety is denser and more stable, making it a favorite for lapidary artists and high-end decor. That "petrified honey" look—ranging from pale lemon to deep golden amber—is actually caused by sulfur deposits trapped within the stone.

But the real magic is the structure! It features a distinct hexagonal pattern that mimics a beehive. Because it’s so translucent, it has a high "glow factor" when lit!

The Soul: ✨
Feeling like you're buzzing around but not getting anywhere? 🐝 Honeycomb Calcite is the ultimate stone for Productivity and Positive Energy. Its golden hue is associated with the Solar Plexus, helping to boost your "can-do" spirit and personal power. It’s used to help clear out mental fog and replace it with the steady, focused energy of a beehive. If you’re looking to bring more "sweetness" and organization into your daily routine, this golden glow is the perfect companion for your desk or studio.

We have some beautiful "slices of sunshine" in the Appalachian Rock Shop right now! Stop by and see how they glow in the light. ☀️
