Nobody pins funeral flowers. Wedding florals always express the notion: “look how beautiful this can be.” Funeral flowers say something quieter. They are there to hold what people can’t say out loud.
One of my favorite things about flowers is their symbolism. Each stem for this headstone-hugging arrangement was picked to symbolize something… all the way down to the yarrow that’s been used for millennia to usher our loved ones to a safe passing. Grief, like this wild space, doesn’t ever stay tidy. Nor should memorial flowers.
Maybe that’s the point I’m trying to make here. Flowers remind us how to live, and also go.
