At just over fifteen hundred feet, Taum Sauk Mountain does not sound impressive by national standards, but it happens to be the highest point in the entire state of Missouri. 🏔️

The trail to Mina Sauk Falls winds through the St. Francois Mountains, some of the oldest exposed rock in North America, before climbing to an overlook where the Ozark ridgelines roll out toward the horizon in every direction. Because the elevation gain is real even if the total number sounds modest, the summit stays quieter than most of Missouri's more accessible viewpoints, especially early in the morning before the day heats up. 🌄

Standing at the literal highest point in the state, looking out over hills that used to be actual mountains before millions of years of erosion wore them down, puts Missouri's geology into a perspective most people never think to consider.
