No one is really from California. Everyone came from somewhere else to California to pursue a dream. NOVA of California is a design and manufacturing company established in 1923 by two brothers with big dreams who moved from Brooklyn to California in the 1950’s to pursue the modernist wave. Born in Chicago, our CEO, Daniel Edelist followed his dream of California living and continues that legacy.

By creating distinctive, intelligent lighting solutions, we know we can enhance our environment and the day to day experience at home and in the workplace. Some ideas never need reinventing.

They continue to earn their place because they were designed with purpose from the very beginning.

Originally introduced in 1961, the Original Morelli Arc Floor Lamp continues to reflect NOVA's belief that great design should improve the way we live, not simply decorate the spaces around us. Here's an advertisement from 1958 announcing a free freight program.

Mel and Marilyn Moskowitz were the heart and soul of NOVA after the company moved from Brooklyn, New York, to California. While the older generation remained in Brooklyn, the new generation found fresh inspiration in California's modernist design revolution.

In 1957, the couple hired Viennese industrial designer Peter Morelli, and the rest is history.

Peter invented the arc lamp in 1959 and went on to create innovative modern designs that put NOVA on the map.

We were in Brooklyn, designing lamps that made apartments feel more like homes. We started in 1923 and haven't stopped innovating since.

The Luna Bella sculpted shade was designed by Peter Morelli in 1967 as part of a design assortment for a high-end hotel brand in Palm Springs.

We began to rethink this shade design with hand-applied gold leaf on its interior, creating the Luna Bella Collection - table lamps, floor lamps, chairside floor lamps, arc lamps, sconces, and ceiling fixtures.

The Luna Bella Collection has been one of our best-selling collections for years, some 59 years after Peter designed it.
