When you first see these big silvery leaves you may think of Lamb’s Ear, but this is actually Senecio candicans. Also known as Angel Wings or Sea Cabbage, it’s native to Argentina but is grown ornamentally all over the world. It can be grown indoors or outdoors and actually is a perennial in Zones 8 and above.

Happy seminar Sunday! If you know anything about herbal medicine, you may have heard of Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa). It is known for being a women’s herb-helping with cramping and postpartum recovery. It’s found in many women’s health teas today! Native to the North American woodlands, indigenous people also used this herb for many different medicinal uses. Besides women’s health, they also used it for everything from arthritis to snakebites. Wild harvesting has lead to some decline in the native population of this plant in Appalachia and local herbalists are calling for conservation efforts.

If you know anything about the Central Coast, you know about our iconic pink jewel next to the sea-the Madonna Inn! This historic inn is kitschy, fun, and BEAUTIFUL. But did you know that there’s a secret garden? That’s right-behind the rose garden where people go to get married there is a garden full of beautiful blooms-including these Garden Dahlias! Native to Mexico and Central America, they bloom from summer to first frost-meaning that these beauties are in the peak of their blooming season! Dahlias were brought to Europe by the conquistadors, and since they are grown from tubers they were easy to transport. They’ve since become a favorite of gardeners the world over. It’s exciting to have these beauties so close to home. If you’re in the Central Coast the Madonna is a must see anyway-and now you know to check out their Dahlias! 🥰

We got to spend some wonderful time with our fellow herb enthusiasts in upstate New York last week at the International Herb Association’s annual conference. One of the cool things about travel is seeing the local flora and fauna. This Frost Aster, for instance, caught our eye. Native to the east coast of North America, Symphyotrichum pilosum blooms summer through Fall and even into Winter in the South (hence its common name).

If you have ever accidentally traipsed through Poison Ivy or Poison Oak you know how awful it can be. But, if you see this growing you might be able to save yourself some itching! Jewelweed or Impatiens capensis can help treat and even prevent itching when the juice from the leaves is used. It also has been found to be effective against athletes foot! It’s an annual that’s native to North America and grows wild in ditches and road sides-quite often found right next to the plant it helps with-Poison Ivy!

Fall is around the corner and we’ve got pumpkins on the brain…but until the Equinox we’re trying to keep our eye on the bright blooms of summer. Like this, Evolvulus glomeratus or Blue Daze. Also known as Hawaiian Blue Eyes or Dwarf Morning Glory, this perennial shrub is native to South America. It loves sun, and will close up in the evenings or on cloudy days. The ultimate sunny summer flower! It blooms from early Spring til first frost.

The final weeks of summer are upon us and soon the long days and vibrant colors will bleed into the shorter days and muted blooms of Autumn. So for now, we’re cherishing the last of these bright blooms. This is Coastal Blue Felicia, or Kingfisher Daisy. Native to South Africa it does not like moist heat, so it does well here in California with its dry, hot days. In colder climates it will only grow as an annual, but here we can keep it as a perennial. It’s also very attractive to our bees and butterflies so it’s great for a pollinator garden!

We are on the precipice of September and it’s feeling like Fall here in Cambria 👻. However, most of California is still hot hot hot! These Shish*to peppers aren’t super hot in general….but one in every ten actually will actually pack a punch. Surprise! It’s a variety of Capsicum annuum and it generally adds a mild smoky flavor to dishes. They grow long and slender, turning from red to green when ripe. This particular species is native to Asia, but Capsicum anuum is actually native to the Americas, and has been grown for human consumption for thousands of years.

The heat of summer is hitting most of California-but we’re staying cool here in Cambria. That being said, we found this bright summery shrub to be a perfect representation of the hot summer days! This is Cuphea ignea-also known as “Firecracker Plant” or “Cigar Plant”. Native to Mexico and the West Indies, its bright tubular flowers are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies alike. These are tropical and will not tolerate frost, but they are evergreen in the right conditions!
