Azaleas

Check the center of an azalea after its spring show. When the interior gets crowded, airflow drops and the plant starts shedding inner leaves. Thinning a few older stems at the base helps light reach the middle and keeps the shrub blooming more evenly year after year.

Gardenias

Gardenias stay healthiest when their centers can breathe. Yellowing leaves tucked deep inside usually mean humidity is trapped. Removing a couple of older, crossing stems improves circulation and helps the plant hold its glossy foliage and fragrant blooms through heavy summer air.

Hydrangeas

“Let them grow their bones,” as the elders said. Hydrangeas build their structure from the inside out. Clearing out weak, shaded‑out twigs encourages stronger stems that can support bigger blooms and reduces flop after rain.

Container plants work harder than in‑ground beds, which means they burn through nutrients and soil moisture faster. Give them a mid‑season boost by refreshing the top 2–3 inches of soil. This improves airflow, reduces compaction, and helps roots take up nutrients more efficiently.
