Canadian researchers have developed a tiny robotic device, about the size of a grain of rice, that may offer a gentler way to help with kidney stones.

The soft, magnetic robot is guided through the body using external magnets and real-time ultrasound imaging. Once it reaches a kidney stone, it releases a natural enzyme that helps break the stone down chemically from the inside out.

The technology, developed at the University of Waterloo with international collaborators, is still in early research stages and has not yet been tested in human patients. Scientists say the approach could eventually offer a simpler option and speed up recovery for people dealing with recurring kidney stones.

Researchers plan to continue refining the device before moving toward the next phase of testing.
