Last year I lost Bennett.

Six months later, I lost Kinsey.

A few months after that, James Van Der Beek died and somehow that was the thing that cracked me open.

I cried for days over a man I'd never met.

At first, I didn't understand it.

Now I think I do.

James didn't create all that grief. His death just found it.

Bennett was there. Kinsey was there. The guilt was there. The empty house was there. Years of things I'd pushed down were there. The grief I carried for other people was there. And underneath all of it was this constant awareness of what's happening in the world around us.

I wasn't grieving one thing.

I was carrying a pile.

That's what this week's blog is about: cumulative grief and what happens when another loss lands before we've had time to process everything that came before it.

And maybe before we ask ourselves how to make all of it go away, we need to acknowledge something much simpler:

Of course I'm tired.

Look at everything I've been carrying.

The full essay and a physical exercise for beginning to unstack some of that grief are on the Mica Magik blog now.

This was spectacular. I was driving home from the gym early this AM. I’ve never been able to see the sun as an actual shape like we do the moon. There was so much fog cover - I could see it. I had to pull over for a photo. Made me stop and be grateful I got to see such a thing.

Picture Emerald as a smoky cat, her gaze flashing verdant as she looks over her shoulder at you. Her uncompromising eyes beckon as she heads into the dark forest of yourself. In this place, this soul womb, you can find your deepest truth and truest love. From here you can see into the future…..or get stuck in the morass of your own stories. Emerald takes you into the woods, when you will either compost your past and find new growth, or molder, stewing in your own toxicity. She’ll watch from the shadows as you decide the path forward. Choosing the path is, in and of itself, an initiation. Begin your journey and Emerald will become a bright lamp, a grow light and a true guide.

We tend to talk about grief like it happens one loss at a time.

Something happens. We grieve. We heal. Life moves on.

Except life doesn't actually work that way.

Sometimes you're grieving a person while worrying about someone you love. You're carrying the loss of a relationship while dealing with changes at work. You're trying to process something happening in your own life while also feeling heartbroken, angry or scared about what's happening in the world.

And then something else happens.

I've been thinking about this a lot because last year I lost both of my dogs six months apart. I thought I understood what I was grieving.

I'm realizing now that I didn't.

There was so much more sitting underneath those losses, including years of things I'd pushed down because I was always "fine."

That's cumulative grief.

And sometimes the thing that finally cracks you open isn't the biggest loss.

It's simply the one that arrived when there was no room left.

I'm talking about cumulative grief and sharing an exercise for beginning to unstack some of what we're carrying in the newest post on MicaMagik.com.

Magical Guidance
This is a time of quiet, a time for reflection, to be still. The peace you crave requires you to slow down, to stop thinking, and to take time out. Give yourself a chance to be silent in order to hear the loving messages of angels’ whispers, to feel the Spirit rest upon your head and to open your heart to appreciate the beauty around you. Be still, breathe and go deep into sanctuary within. Here in this sacred place you’ll find restoration of balance and harmony. Once you’ve convalesced in tranquility, you’ll be able to see with new eyes and achieve a sense of peace in every moment.
