Did you know that with each changer repair you get a custom-made set of instructions? Complete with specific information about cartridges, replacement needles and 45 adapters. They are simple, easy to follow and extremely valuable for those who've never used a record changer before. Moreso when it comes to replacing the needle as the original part numbers are obsolete, and if the cartridge has been changed.

Abandoned Magnavox update. The new owner reports "My Julie London and Dave Brubeck LPs never sounded so good! I am so frickin' happy!!!" I'll assume he's satisfied.
I always wonder what a change of cartridge will do. Tetrads in Magnavox, owners seem very happy with them.

Nice to see something different. Admiral in stunningly wonderful condition came in needing a general service. Somebody already replaced the motor mounts and cartridge (wired backwards -Akk!), but a little more work needed to be done to get it right.
Admiral built their own fine record changers, and even sold them under the Ensign name to other manufacturers. I'd put this one right around 1960. All functions are smooth and quiet. The on/off/reject lever has a delightfully light touch.

The "service" on this one only lasted a couple years before it became unplayable. As I see so often, the bare minimum was done, 𝘒𝘯π˜₯ π˜‰π˜ˆπ˜‹ 𝘡𝘩π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 π˜₯𝘰𝘯𝘦. Wrong needle was forced into the cartridge, stylus pressure set at 9g. Part of the tonearm mounting broken (and glued with brittle glue). Black grease on the trip parts. All in all, we're gonna give that attempt a D. We service to last 25+ years.
New cartridge and tonearm wiring installed, correct stylus pressure, mechanism completely cleaned of old grease and appropriate synthetic lubricant used where needed.
This is a Collaro Conquest badged for Magnavox.

This one is near and dear to my heart. My very first console stereo pulled from the trash in 1982, still in my possession, features this same Garrard 3000 LM changer with a custom weighted platter and mat exclusively for Sylvania. What an absolute joy to have one come in for service. The owner has no idea what good hands his machine is in - it's royalty in this household.
Came generally functioning but smeared with white lithium grease under the platter making the end of record trip quite sticky. Please don't use white lithium grease on record changers. It eventually causes more problems.
Extra long video. Take note how thoroughly modern this machine was for 1964. Low mass tonearm, grey and black colors.
I have the 45 adapter but was digging through singles and found this.

Freaking Magnavox motors…. This one suddenly quit on the owner. I found the insulator deteriorated and the tiny little wire broken off. I couldn't find the end of it so this motor is toasted. I think maybe somebody sprayed lubricant into it at some point. She said it was serviced three years ago. I found several mistakes and things overlooked.
Amazingly the owner has a parts unit missing a few other things but has a motor.
I had to start putting on my PDF that we send out. One page has a list of various manufacturers and what to sometimes expect. I had to add "occasionally a motor" to Magnavox. Had a couple of clunkers lately.

Now that I think about it, we may have already featured this record in its original pressing. I found this stereo re-issue in my stash. This Zenith branded BIC 20Z came in from our friend Ross Rian. Frozen platter, and had been doused with some sort of spray lubricant, so quite a bit of disassembly for cleaning. These machines are reasonably simple; however they do have a couple of high tension springs that are a little bit of a bear to reinstall. Sourced a spindle, belt, and fresh stylus for it.

OK, abandoned Magnavox is officially for sale. In beautiful cosmetic condition with just a little wear on the front panel where somebody's finger lifted their records off many times. Here's the nightmare RCA from yesterday. Working just as it should. Since the guy is local I'm going to keep my eyes open for a new balance arm assembly. The shaft on his was bent and although I was able to straighten and smooth it out as best as I could, I still feel like it's a little sticky.
Not mentioned in the previous post, this got a cartridge conversion to Tetrad. After the first round of testing, found out that the cartridge was bad, it tested OK but had an intermittent channel. So I had to start that process all over since they are put in with adhesive.
I always loved this record. I don't think ABC records lasted very long after this release. MCA absorbed most of the contracts.
