❓ Have you ever been made to feel that being a sports minister is not as high a calling as other ministry positions? Or, have you been told that sport is good but not as good, or valuable as other pursuits?

📖 In this edition of our Daily Huddle our discussion is focused on the athletic Greek word Paul was inspired to write to the Christians of the church in ancient Collosae: Katabrabeuo’ which is interpreted in Colossians 2:18 as “to give an unfavorable decision” or to “disqualify.”

Just as “unrighteous sports officials” in the ancient Greek games would at times unjustly “disqualify” an athlete, today church “officials” sometimes make “unfavorable” and might I add, unbiblical decisions… in regards to sport and sport ministry…saying they are less than other ministries, callings or pursuits.

❤️ So the action point for today is…to not let anyone “disqualify” you from God’s call on your life to play, compete and minister in the world of sport.

❓ Who are you “struggling” for...

Today we continue on the theme of “striving” or “struggling”... spiritually speaking. Our conversation continues to be based upon our ongoing study of the Greek word Agon which was an athletic term that was rooted in the concept of an athlete’s “striving or struggling” to overcome an opponent or obstacle.

Paul writes to believers in the ancient city of Colossae that he, that is Paul, “struggles” or “strives” that the Colossians hearts may be encouraged.”

Are you “struggling or striving” for your sports ministry leaders, teammates and/or players?” Are you “striving & struggling” (meaning you are engaging in efforts) so that their hearts are encouraged and that they may be ever more increasingly mature in their walk with the ultimate head coach - Jesus?

🙏 Action point: Today, make a list of who you are called encourage and specifically how you are to encourage their maturing in Jesus!

❓Did you know the word athlete can be found in the Bible?

Yes, God inspired the Apostle Paul to communicate spiritual lessons that are based on the athletic experience! In a letter he wrote to his protégé Timothy, Paul wrote: athletes are not crowned unless they compete according to the rules.”

The spiritual lesson he was inspired to communicate to his young ministry student was: “Live your life according to the biblical rules.”

There’s a good chance that if you’re seeing this, you are a sports minister, athlete or coach... and you know that you can be disqualified from winning any sports championship unless you compete by the rules. Similarly, the spiritual lesson for all Christians and any sports minister who may be watching… is that unless we live our lives according to the biblical mandates, our witness and ministry will be greatly hampered if not completely nullified.

So commit today to "compete" according to the rules in your sport, but more importantly, live according to the biblical mandates!
