Some flea markets pop up for a season. Canton's has been running since before Texas joined the railroad age. 🛍️

First Monday Trade Days in Canton traces back to the 1850s, when it started as a simple gathering tied to the county court's monthly session, the one Monday a month when farmers and traders from the surrounding area would already be in town anyway. Over generations it grew into a massive recurring market that now spreads across acres of land, drawing vendors and shoppers from well outside the county for antiques, tools, quilts, and just about anything else you can imagine finding folded into a folding table display.

What I love about this one is that it never really stopped. It didn't get revived or rebuilt as a tourist attraction, it just kept happening, month after month, decade after decade, adapting in scale but never losing the basic rhythm that started it. That kind of continuity is rare, and it says something about how deeply this kind of trading tradition is woven into small-town Texas life. 🧺
