In Russia, the word for a pawnshop is ломбард (Lombard).

The term traces its roots back to the Lombardy region of northern Italy. During the Middle Ages, Lombard merchants and bankers became famous throughout Europe for lending money, exchanging currency, and providing loans secured by collateral. As they spread across Europe, the public began associating collateral lending and pawn banking with the Lombards themselves.

Over time, the word “Lombard” became synonymous with a place where money was lent against pledged property. That’s why variations of the word are still used today for pawnshops in countries such as Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and others.

In many ways, the Lombards were among the early pioneers of modern collateral-based lending, helping lay the foundation for what would eventually become the pawn industry we know today.

Fun Fact:
The word pawnshop may change from country to country, but the core concept remains the same: providing people with fast access to cash by leveraging the value of their personal property. It’s a system that has been helping communities for centuries.

Trust but verify: The history is a bit more nuanced than “the Lombards invented pawnshops.” Collateral lending existed long before them, including in ancient China, Greece, and Rome. However, the Lombards became so influential in medieval European finance that their name became attached to the trade itself.

That makes “Lombard” one of the few words in the pawn industry whose history stretches back nearly a thousand years. 🔑💰🏛️
