We are a small native plant nursery who only use organic and sustainable methods to grow plants that are a part of our vulnerable ecosystem. We believe native plants are superior in their abilities to contribute to their environment. Plants that are native have co-evolved over thousands of years with native insects and are uniquely able to sustain life by playing a part in the delicate web of life

. We also believe that plants that have been grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers or insecticides are better for the environment and are better contributors since they are free of chemicals that can harm the very insects and fauna we are trying to protect. We are excited to be a part of the growing native plant movement and want to help others learn about and understand the necessity of planting natives.

There is a common misconception in the gardening world that all planting must stop in the summer. So for those who don’t know, you can plant native plants in the summer as long as it’s raining or you can water them every few days. Plants are actively growing right now. That means they are putting out new growth and roots and doing what they need to do to survive and thrive. As I tell people, if we can keep thousands of plants alive in containers all summer, you can plant a few in the ground just fine. Fall is the best time for planting large trees that have had their roots cut from being balled and burlaped and it’s definitely a nice time for us as humans to plant. But, if you’re looking longingly out at your yard and wishing you had more bees and butterflies, you don’t have to wait for fall to make it happen.
We will be at the nursery today from 10-1 if you would like to come see what we have. 🦋🥰

I’ve been fortunate to spend another week up here in western NC and I’m trying to decide if I even want go home to Georgia. ☺️ I just can’t get over the roadside shows of Lilium superbum! I got to meet a new little Blazing Star, Liatris helleri, that is rare and only grows at high elevations. And the pipevine and pipevine swallowtails are as abundant as kudzu in Georgia! Plus, the big show of Liatris, coreopsis, and Asclepias off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I guess this is all a good reminder we have a lot of work to do back in GA. I’m ready to burn some pasture this fall!! 🔥

Whew- it’s hot. I guess summertime has finally found us! 🌞 I wanted to give an update on hours and also advice on gardening in the heat.

First off, we are now open through August, 10-1 Tuesday-Friday. Saturdays by appointment. If it’s crazy hot though, we may not be out past noon so message or email us before coming this way. If you don’t want to be out in it for hours, nor do we. ☺️

Second, watering. If you planted in last fall or earlier this spring, your plants should be establishing themselves and not need a whole lot of extra help from you. The secret to getting plants established is to water infrequently, but deeply. Soak them and then back off. Watch them for a few days. If they aren’t flagging (drooping from loss of water pressure in the leaf and stem) leave them alone. A lot of messages I get this time of year are from people loving their gardens to death. Native plants are tough and as long as you have the right plant in the right place, it will want to grow deep roots. This is only possible if you allow the roots to go in search of water and nutrients. Hand watering is always going to be better than running an irrigation system. Watering in morning is best. Comment below with questions and I will do my best to answer.

Stay safe and cool everyone and we can’t wait to get back into crazy mode with yall again in September!!! 🥰😘🌻

Sooooo scary!! 🐛🐍

(No, they don’t bite. No they’re not really scary.)

Finally caught it on video! 🐛 What is this Spicebush swallowtail caterpillar doing? If you’re familiar with these babies you know they roll themselves up into a leaf to hide out during the day. It is one of their protective mechanisms along with mimicry markings they use to appear like a small snake. What this little friend is doing is spreading silk on the leaf and as the silk dries it causes the leaf to curl over them. Sounds cozy doesn’t it?

If you want to see these adorable caterpillars turn into beautiful blue and black spicebush butterflies in your garden, you’re gonna need to plant spicebush or sassafras because that is their host plant. Yes, we have both plants for sale (but we keep the caterpillars). 🥰
